Steyn/Goldberg/Long #3: The Butch Key
It may be hard to believe, but we actually scheduled this episode weeks ago, way before anyone was talking about Weiner, or YFrog, or forced to endure yet another sobbing press conference. Nonetheless, the hosts of this august endeavor carry on and give their (decidedly PG-13) views on this, the latest and most visible of political scandals to come down the pike in a while. But it's not all about Congressman Underpants. One of our hosts is celebrating a birthday, and we're proud to bring you a Ricochet first: Mark Steyn breaks into song!
Ricochet members, you may step to the front of the line by clicking here to play the show in your browser or subscribe via iTunes. On a mobile device? No problem! Click here and choose direct link for MP3 file. Not a member yet? Join today and in mere moments, and Mark Steyn will be soloing in your earbuds.
Our thanks to Special Guest Ombudsman/Ricochet Member Kennedy Smith for generously volunteering to write some links to go with this podcast and to EJHill for the image (photo by John Holland):
- This show is still as yet unamed, but we all know where this is headed, right? Mark plays the songs Americans won't play at the piano bar on a cruise ship coming near you. The only question is, who has to be Martin Short?
- Chickens and ducks and geese better scurry. It’s Rob’s birthday, in Oklahoma.
- For previews of Jonah's stack o'jokes, follow him on Twitter @JonahNRO.
- Mark Foley has not gone away. He has a radio show, Foley On Politics.
- Debbie Wasserman Schultz, "the gift that keeps on giving".
- On your own, pal. Harry Reid says "call somebody else".
- Least effective pledge drive ever. NPR on sexting. Just give us a tote bag, please.
- The Report of the Cox-Dicks Commission. Hey, it was probably very important.
- More than you want to know about Congressman Dick Swett.
- Sadly, the legendary Clarence Thomas skit from SNL is still quarantined, as it features Al Franken.
- A scenery-chewing new production of the Screwtape Letters, by Sarah Palin’s favorite author.
- The classic film First Family, starring Bob Newhart, which I’m amazed somebody else in the world remembers.
- Put not your faith in cue cards, Dan Quayle. The precursor to the teleprompter.
- A ripping yarn from Bernard Cornwell, for any who still believe that poem about Paul Revere.
- John Kerry is fascinated by hip-hop, all you hep cats and cool kittehs.
- Cicero was the greatest orator OF ALL TIME, and knew how to work a sex scandal for maximum entertainment value.
- Rob’s encounter with Ronald Reagan, as documented by the film Die Hard.
- Happy Birthday, from Marilyn.
- And, just cause it’s the season for sex scandals, Ann Coulter’s shocking relationship with the New York Times, EXPOSED!

Trivial Pursuit point: Cicero is the only pagan quoted and footnoted in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Re: Steyn/Goldberg/Long #3: The Butch Key
Jonah and Mark's memories have erased the fact that Clinton bought Monica a copy of "Vox", a book about phone sex. That just shows that they are better men than I am. If I recall correctly, he used to order job lots of that book, and "Leaves of Grass", to distribute to his various inamorata
Happy Birthday, Rob. And thank you all!

Now that's interesting. I got the John Paul II 2nd edition, and can't find it. Cicero was publicly very pious, but from his private letters was not a believer in much of anything.
There's no modern way to describe Cicero. Saying that Perry Mason was elected President sort of hints in the right direction, but doesn't quite capture it.

Footnote to Paragraph 1956 on the Natural Law. Cicero was a Stoic.

Re: Steyn/Goldberg/Long #3: The Butch Key
The quote from the Catechism: For there is a true law: right reason. It is in conformity with nature, is diffused among all men, and is immutable and eternal; its orders summon to duty; its prohibitions turn away from offense. To replace it with a contrary law is a sacrilege; failure to apply even one of its provisions is forbidden; no one can abrogate it entirely.
On the whole, I'm glad went with the Pro Caelio bit from the novel The Venus Throw, though the invectives against Catiline would have worked too (I just like the plot of The Venus Throw better). Give him a juicy scandal, and there was no better orator/politician.
PS The closest equivalent we have is Rush. Cicero could run with a topic for three solid hours and keep an audience spellbound. Of course, Rush could never get elected President, but the Roman Republic wasn't even close to a democracy. As long as Cicero kept folks entertained and was backed by the right people...

Loved the analogy of the tea party to the red eyes of wolves in the night.

Re: Steyn/Goldberg/Long #3: The Butch Key
Wow, still no official title for the podcast. Here are some more suggestions:
Steyn-Long-Goldberg Overdrive (SLG Overdrive)...yes, a Canadian reference
SLuG Fest...acronyms galore
Tall Stone of the Gold Mountain...esoteric surname reference, or (late) Ronnie James Dio song
CCcP...two big "C" conservatives and a small "c" squish Podcast, plus cold-war reference
Get Off My Lawn! Podcast...random cultural reference
Dandy, Hippie, Geek...guess which host is which

Re: Steyn/Goldberg/Long #3: The Butch Key
A serious point. Rob (I think) asserted that he'd have rather not known about any of what Rep. Weiner was doing with the "little member of congress". I disagree. I want to know which of our representitives are doing stuff like this. I think this is a more telling indiciation of whether you are fit to serve than any policy position you might take in public. I hate to agree with Ross Perot, but if you can't keep the most important promise you make, to be faithful, AND you show the appallingly bad judgment to tweet your junk to random women on the net, then you are disqualified from ruling over the lives of others, and I want to know who you are so we can kick your (@#$%) out of Congress.

Re: Steyn/Goldberg/Long #3: The Butch Key
Let me try to counteract Mark Steyn's Wail of Conservative Geezer Pain...
You shouldnt despair because people choose to flirt via email ( flirting in the normal sense, not the Weinerian variety) because in practice, it allows you to keep alive a fine Victorian tradition. Using the ever-helpful PRINT button, these flattering emails can be printed out and bundled together with ribbon (a la Jane Austen) to be read and sighed over, long after the flirtor's face had faded from memory.
They're also useful for blackmail--another fun Victorian custom !---and you can dramatically toss them in the fireplace as many times as you wish, knowing full well they can always be retrieved from your email archives.

Gents;Another tour de force in the podcast whose name shall not be spoken. Smart, insightful and laugh-out-loud funny. Happy birthday wishes to Rob but there's one question you need to be asking yourself. Under the Ryan plan will the Medicare premium supports be enough for you to afford a segue transplant from James Lileks?

Re: Steyn/Goldberg/Long #3: The Butch Key
I'd love to listen to this premium podcast on my ipod or ipad. But itunes won't prompt me for my Ricochet password, so it won't download. And the iPad wont do premium podcasts at all.
UPDATE...
Thanks to Blue Yeti I now have the podcast! iTunes still won't do the password, but Blue Yeti figured out a workaround to keep me going for now. Great support, thank you. Off for a jog to hear what you guys have been commenting about.
