I typically avoid talking about that group of blaspheming hatemongerers that go around picketing soldiers' funerals and the like. But this was too funny:

Can you say "hypocrite"? I thought you could.

I heard somebody say, their business model is to goad cities into violating their free speech rights somehow, or lock them up, so that they can legally collect donations (a defense fund) on the basis of "defending religious freedom," and not on the basis of their actual views. And since they're their own lawyers, the defense fund goes directly to them.

You follow these people?
Re: Steve Jobs: 1, Westboro Baptist: 0
etoiledunord,
Close but I doubt they'd be able to collect much from a legal defense fund. Rather, they win awards by suing jurisdictions that violate their free speech, yes. This is among the many reasons why I tend to prefer just ignoring them.

Having read a great book on Margaret Murray O'hare and how her fight against religion was just a facade for seeking donations to fight the "Christers" to coin her phrase, I trust their hypocrisy is as obvious now, as hers was eventually exposed to be. They are as abhorrent now as the money changers were to Jesus as we read in the gospels, when he took up a scourge and chased them from the temple.
Anyone know where we can get a scourge?
Seriously, I trust everyone realizes they don't represent the gospel's true message that we are never left only with God's judgement of our sin at the cross, but can find forgiveness and redemption through His sacrifice and eternal life through His Son. They of Westboro Baptist appear only to leave one condemned and seem willing to me at least to be selling their souls for silver.

Reminds me of the following anecdote: In the 1970s Greenpeace steamed its flagship The Rainbow Warrior up to Wilmington DE to protest DuPont's manufacture of ozone-killing Freon refrigerants. To raise awareness (and money) they allowed visitors to tour the ship for a fee. But upon boarding, visitors were asked to shut all exterior doors behind them because, as a posted sign indicated, "we're air conditioned" ... must be nice to go through life with absolutely no self-awareness.

That is about the funniest example of hypocrisy I have ever seen.

Knowing the Jobs family knack for privacy, these publicity hounds will likely be unable to find the funeral. Wandering northern California to the end of their does hoping to chance onto the event. The Phelps family's just deserts.

The Westboro folks have a right to do what they do, but they don't represent any kind of deity that I believe in.

Unfortunately, many unbelievers think exactly this; that this is really what is in the hearts of most Christians but that most of us are able to keep these beliefs subdued.
I wish these people would develop their own group of fanatical protesters, following them around, and protesting their public appearances. A little OT eye for an eye, if you will.

Speaking of giving God glory, the folks at Westboro have much to learn about that. Soli Deo Gloria!
