After a revolving-door recidivistic predator attempted to rape a woman in Sheriff Chuck Wright's Spartanburg County, he dispensed some advice to the humble citizens of his jurisdiction:

undertech-undercover-concealment-shirt-womens

"I want you to get a concealed weapons permit," Sheriff Chuck Wright said at the Monday news conference, as reported by TV station WYFF. "Don't get Mace. Get a firearm."

Liberals, most of whom have never seen a firearm in person, like to portray concealed weapons not as a tool for self-defense, but as a step toward vigilantism and a threat to law enforcement officers.

Of course the decision to carry a weapon is highly personal.  I'm interested to hear what our many lovely Ricochettes think of the good sheriff's suggestion.

Cas Balicki: What no word from the editor? A whole half-hour has gone by and no editor has taken my complaint about the sexist, page-three nature of the photographic illustration seriously. What gives? Are some complainants around here more equal than others? I want this situation dealt with. Where are all the outraged female members? Should they not, to a woman, be hitting their send buttons. This is an outrage! Editor! I demand you do something! · Nov 2 at 10:53am

Cas, I see that you're trying to provoke a fight.  If you have a problem with the photo Mr. Wilson used in the post, you can report it using the flag button.

The photo used in the post is of a modestly clothed woman wearing a firearm, which illustrates the topic of the post. It is not lewd, misogynistic, or offensive in any way.

Mollie, have you ever had the crap beat out of you by a complete stranger on your front door step at 7:00 at night?  Then choked, leaving behind ten bruises on your throat?  Had the permanent memory of a deep man's voice you've never heard before yelling profanities in your ear with hatred...because you decided not to give up your purse?  I have.  And if I had had a gun I would have used it to remove his horrendous power over me.  I was fortunate...the neighbor's German Shepard jumped his six foot fence and attacked the guy.  I can't describe the acid of fear that pours through your body in a situation like that.  But once you experience it you will make sure you never do again.  Ever.

By the way...an Iranian immigrant stood and watched the whole thing.  He told the police he thought I was the filthy dirt bag's wife. · Nov 2 at 9:34am

Holy smokes, what a story. Sorry to hear that happened to you. Dirt bags have been warned...

Mollie Hemingway, Ed.: I wouldn't carry a firearm, just because I believe that you must be prepared to use it to the point of death. I'm not prepared to do that and I've heard it's more dangerous to carry if you're not.  But I fully support the good sheriff's advice. · Nov 2 at 8:02

For ladies who don't want to (or can't because of local/state law) carry a gun, I recommend Krav Maga or some other sort of self-defense class.  I go at least twice a week, and we receive instruction in defense against gun wielding attackers as well as just about any other situation imaginable (including hijacking and car jacking).  My instructor recommends knowing how to use a gun, but when seconds count, you might not even have the time to get it out of it's holster.

By the way, Mollie, I'm not judging you.  I hope it didn't come across that way.  I felt the same way you do before I had that bad experience in college. · Nov 2 at 9:38am

I'd trust myself with a firearm before I'd trust any cop.

Andrea Ryan: The problem women have with carrying a weapon is where to put it.  In cooler weather the strap the woman is using in the picture works, but it doesn't when it's 95 degrees and humid.  A pistol or revolver is also somewhat heavy and bulky, so it's a pain to lug around...

I've been the holder of a Texas Concealed Handgun License (CHL) for six years now.  During that time, I've found the Smith & Wesson Model 342 (it uses .38 caliber bullets) to be a great sidearm: small, powerful, easy to conceal.  Fits right into the front pocket of my blue jeans.

I agree that Krav Maga is very helpful.  But the problem is access to, and cost of, ongoing training.  Also, I live out in the country and went for a walk the other day only to have two coyotes criss-cross back and forth in front of me.  I'm not sure how Krav Maga would have worked had they decided to really screw with me.  :-)

The Ruger LC9 is a great size, too, but it doesn't fit in any of my pockets. :-(

That's too bad, for the LC9 is quite an impressive weapon!

Or just carry around a big dog.  Not to be confused with the cute fluffy thing in my picture...my other dog was too big to fit in the square.

Your other dog will be quite large when fully grown, right?

The day he turned five months he weighed 50 pounds.  My last Newfoundland weighed 180 by the time he was two, so we'll see what Eisenhower ends up being.  But his puppy bark...good Lord!!  There's nothing more daunting than walking into my house and hearing a Wooooooooooooof! that shakes the floor.

Andrea,

Sorry to hear about your experience. In April 2008, I was (and still am) working at a warehouse when I was held up at gunpoint and held hostage for four hours during a heist by three men. It seemed at first that they might kill me, but fortunately they did not. I still work there because there are now armed guards there with me. I'd like to carry a gun but this is still (even with Chris Christie) the People's Republic of New Jersey. Believe me, if I could carry a gun, I would.

Diane, I'm not familiar with the original complaint against Cas Balicki, but it could be argued that this photo does accentuate the woman's sexuality. She is poised as to appear, um, significantly 'healthier' than the average female.

The photo is from a catalog advertising a holster integrated into the shirt to meet the needs of women who want to carry a weapon but still wear fashionable clothing.  The shirt in question is meant to be worn under another garment, which is a common way for women to dress.  So yes, as usual in the clothing business, her looks are part of the marketing of this product.  I chose the photo because it is representative of the topic of the post.

Cutlass: Man, you had me really excited for a moment. I saw the headline and thought the woman in the picture was "South Carolina's Serious Sheriff."  I imagined she was some tough-as-nails former Navy SEAL/debutante just elected sheriff of a rough-n-tumble small town.· Nov 2 at 6:57am

The screenplay almost writes itself.

Mark, no problem with the picture. Don't let people bother you about it. What else could you do, anyway? It shows the fashion accessory perfectly.
