South Carolina Rocked by Scandal Involving Governor
No not that governor and not that scandal. Apparently the current governor, Nikki Haley has been proven to be a liar. See today's Post and Courier.
COLUMBIA -- What box should Gov. Nikki Haley check when it comes to her race?
The South Carolina Democratic Party tried Thursday to make Haley out as a liar for checking "white" as her race on her 2001 Lexington County voter registration application.
But the application had no specific option for "Indian." Her options were "white, black/African-American, Asian, Hispanic, Native American or other."
Dick Harpootlian, the Democratic Party chairman, said whether Haley listed her race as white or not doesn't matter to him. The point is, he said, that the governor has a pattern of twisting the truth.
"Haley has been appearing on television interviews where she calls herself a minority -- when it suits her," Harpootlian said. "When she registers to vote, she says she is white. She has developed a pattern of saying whatever is beneficial to her at the moment."
The nerve of that woman. She had the audacity to consider herself white. Who does she think she is? Come to think of it, my congressman, Tim Scott, had the audacity to not join the Congressional Black Caucus. Who does he think he is?
In unrelated news, it was reported today that 73 out of the 74 school districts in South Carolina failed the federal No Child Left Behind education standards. Way to go South Carolina. Not only do you waste the money I have to pay in property taxes but you elect another lying Republican to be Governor.

I ran into the same thing. Evidently, at some point in the past I became American Indian. I am, but only barely.
The way the Census usually codes it these are different cases.
The Census will let you check both "white" and "American Indian" but not let you check both yes and no to "Hispanic or Latino origin." That these are two separate questions and that one allows multiple responses whereas the other doesn't is less about demography than a series of political compromises in the 1970s (the Hispanic question) and the 1990s (the race question).

Speaking of South Carolina shenanigans, are you coming to the Ricochet meetup at the Lazy Goat tomorrow, Southern Pessimist? It's only a 3 1/2 hour drive from Charleston to Greenville, after all...

I self-identified as "Pacific Islander" on every standardized test I took as a youth. It seemed like the most exotic choice.
I mean, who wants to be just another white kid from Wisconsin with German ancestors?

Is "Mormon/Mostly British Ancestry with Male Pattern Baldness" an appropriate category?
Three of my grandchildren are 1/16 Korean--can they be Asians?

Do you have a copy of the form? I would frame it and hang it on the wall. It never ceases to amaze me that the proponents of these classifications don't understand how how culturally insensitive they are. The treatment of hispanics is a great example - what they mean is "a mixed race person from Mexico or Central America," but they use it as a proxy for anyone who speaks Spanish. When I lived in Argentina, the very-European locals would have been offended to be told that they were not "white." · Jul 29 at 12:22pm
The Census does not treat "white" and "Hispanic" as mutually exclusive. Standard Census procedure is to consider both whites and mestizos to be white race and Hispanic ethnicity. However many dark-skinned mestizos don't consider themselves white and end up self-classifying as "other" race and Hispanic ethnicity.

The last time my family identified it's heritage accurately ( German ) we had to worry about being persecuted by Democrat officials. My wife's great-Aunt was even incarcerated and deported simply for being married to a Bund member.

Humza Ahmad: My mother, the daughter of immigrants to East Africa from British India, was born in Uganda and grew up in England, where she called herself an East African Asian. When she came to the US my Dad explained that didn't mean the same thing to Yanks...

The whole way we classify race on these kinds of forms is schizophrenic. Do we want to identify people by skin color or ethnicity? Because some Indians could certainly be called black, but Somalians look nothing like your average Bantu. And our forms have "White", "African American", and "Hispanic". Well, I know lots of Hispanics that are as white as I am, with light hair. Why White for white people and yet "African American" for black people? Why not just "black"? An immigrant from Libya or Tunisia or Egypt would technically be an African-American.
Color or ethnicity? Make up your mind, Uncle Sam.

Two of my sons were college rugby players--most of their teammates were of Maori, Samoan, and Tongan descent. My sons can do the Haka. I think that's good enough for them to be Pacific Islanders.

Re: South Carolina Rocked by Scandal Involving Governor
First off, if this is all they can dig up, there's nothing to worry about. This is a complete non-event.
Secondly, why don't all of us 'whites' start choosing 'Mexican/Latino' on forms, etc.? As far as I understand it, we're all technically Caucasians with the only difference being skin color, but that's not necessarily true across the board. This whole farce about race should be made a mockery of at every turn in my opinion. Enough is enough already.

My dad always checks "Native American" in these sorts of things, as he was born in America, and thus a Native, American.
He never goes with "Caucasian," as his ancestry from Germany and Scandinavia isn't anywhere near the Caucus region.

Re: South Carolina Rocked by Scandal Involving Governor
We will never lose the box checking. There are huge advantages in employment, college admissions, and scholarship eligibility for being hispanic or black. There are even seperate categories in the National Merit Scholarship competition for blacks and hispanics, with much lower thresholds for winning awards. Do some hunting for scholarhships and you will see how few do not use race or low income as a factor.

Someday they'll take everyone's DNA sample at birth, and they'll just calculate it from there. No more forms to fill out. You might find that you're part Asian, just like the mailman.

As someone who uses sarcasm as my default form of communication, I sniff something familiar here. Earlier I texted my son who toils tirelessly in his spare time to create the best sports medicine website on the planet that I had finally posted something that went viral or at least protozoan.
