No not that governor and not that scandal. Apparently the current governor, Nikki Haley has been proven to be a liar. See today's Post and Courier.

COLUMBIA -- What box should Gov. Nikki Haley check when it comes to her race?

The South Carolina Democratic Party tried Thursday to make Haley out as a liar for checking "white" as her race on her 2001 Lexington County voter registration application.

But the application had no specific option for "Indian." Her options were "white, black/African-American, Asian, Hispanic, Native American or other."

Dick Harpootlian, the Democratic Party chairman, said whether Haley listed her race as white or not doesn't matter to him. The point is, he said, that the governor has a pattern of twisting the truth.

"Haley has been appearing on television interviews where she calls herself a minority -- when it suits her," Harpootlian said. "When she registers to vote, she says she is white. She has developed a pattern of saying whatever is beneficial to her at the moment."

The nerve of that woman. She had the audacity to consider herself white. Who does she think she is? Come to think of it, my congressman, Tim Scott, had the audacity to not join the Congressional Black Caucus. Who does he think he is?

In unrelated news, it was reported today that 73 out of the 74 school districts in South Carolina failed the federal No Child Left Behind education standards. Way to go South Carolina. Not only do you waste the money I have to pay in property taxes but you elect another lying Republican to be Governor.

I seem to be a beige, pinkish color myself (and brighter pink when I fall asleep at the beach), so that should make me a member of the beige, pinkish (intense summer pink) race shouldn't it? How come all there is to choose from for me is "white"? If I was truly "white" there may be some serious health issues to attend to.

And what about children born from one parent who is "white" and the other parent who is "Asian"? Is there a "White/Asian" box to check? Or an "Asian/White" box? Shouldn't there be numerous other boxes for mixed-race people? Why aren't there?

Will be so glad when this affirmative action categorization nonsense disappears. Will we ever heed the words of Martin Luther King, Jr.?

I seem to recall there being an "Indian Red" crayon in the Crayola box when I was growing up. I believe that disappeared decades ago. Which reminds me of the New Yorker cartoon of the settler running excitedly around the covered wagons that have been shot full of arrows and shouting: "Native Americans! Native Americans!"

Bobby Jindal should also be exposed --- his real name isn't Bobby.   What is he trying to hide?   These two governors have some nerve achieving so much without the help of affirmative action.  It makes all those other "people of color" look bad.

I was wondering if anyone would comment on that. Is that not the perfect name for a Democratic Party chairman?

We're still talking about crayons, right?

I got into an argument with the census worker who came to my door over this issue last year.  I took umbrage that I --the whitest person I know-- couldn't be classified as white because I happen to be half Mexican.  I told her that I wanted her to mark me down as white, and she said that would be false and so she couldn't do that, and then I told her I wanted to end the survey.  She wrote down on the form that I was being belligerent and non-compliant.

Public education isn't funded through property taxes in South Carolina and hasn't been for a couple of years now. Bond issues for special projects approved by voters in a school district can be on your real estate taxes but we replaced the revenue stream from property taxes to education with a 1% add on sales tax.  We enjoy some of the lowest real estate/ property taxes in the nation and a sales tax still lower than some neighboring states as a result.

Since there isn't a single Democrat holding a statewide elective office in our state the ravings of the D's down in Columbia sure don't rock our part of the state but maybe you know a Democrat or two down there in beautiful Charleston, SP.  Cheers from the Upstate.

That cracked Me up!

Hay, Diane, I said this to one:

"I see 'African American' on there. How far back are We allowed to go? I want to be an 'Eden American....' no, wait... scratch that. 'Big Bang American!' Yeah, that's it."

I had forgotten about that, which made me look at my tax records for the last few years and indeed the property tax on my primary residence has dropped some but the tax on a second home I have has gone up. I believe I pay 10.5% in local and state sales tax in addition to a top rate of 5.5% state income tax. However we fund public schools, it does not seem to be money well spent.

Last I checked Democrats considered women to be a minority class.  Does he think she is lying about her color and her sex?  How does it benefit somone to register as a white when they vote?

Your right about that too. When I lived in the upstate I was considered liberal. Down here we are overrun with liberal yankees.

I make a point to skip that question whenever possible, though I guess my name gives away a lot. When people ask me where I'm from, I tell them Long Island. If they ask again, I say that I was born in Manhattan and the family moved to Westbury when I was a baby. What my skin color or my parent's background has to do with anything when I first meet someone or in an official capacity is beyond me.

My mother, the daughter of immigrants to East Africa from British India, was born in Uganda and grew up in England, where she called herself an East African Asian. When she came to the US my Dad explained that didn't mean the same thing to Yanks...

More recently, my younger brother tried to check off the "African-American" box on a college application. When my sister and I yelled at him about it, he shouted back "but Mom's African!!

Apparently the South Carolina Democratic party hasn't given much thought to comparative linguistics or DNA analysis.

I ran into the same thing. Evidently, at some point in the past I became American Indian. I am, but only barely. In any case, that's how the federal government classifies me, despite the fact that all I've ever checked on my military stuff is 'White (non-Hispanic)'. The census-taker got really snippy with me about it, essentially telling me that I couldn't just change my race because I feel like it. I told him that if the president gets to do it, I should as well. Seems to have worked out pretty well for him.

Do you have a copy of the form?  I would frame it and hang it on the wall.  It never ceases to amaze me that the proponents of these classifications don't understand how how culturally insensitive they are. The treatment of hispanics is a great example - what they mean is "a mixed race person from Mexico or Central America," but they use it as a proxy for anyone who speaks Spanish.  When I lived in Argentina, the very-European locals would have been offended to be told that they were not "white."

My thoughts precisely.  Speaks volumes about Harpootlian's assumptions, though.

Heck, during Haley's primary campaign, some goober state senator in the Midlands (a Republican, in fact), referred to her as a "raghead."  You'd think that would be all the minority-cred she would need.  If she were a liberal, they'd be trying to name a university after her.
