Sore Loser Mike Castle Will NOT Run as a Third-Party Spoiler in DE
The news came in late last night from the Hill (via Jay Cost at The Weekly Standard).
Politics Daily reports:
Rep. Mike Castle, who lost Delaware's Republican Senate primary to Tea Party favorite Christine O'Donnell and won't endorse her, said Wednesday night that he will not run as a write-in candidate. The decision came two days after a Rasmussen poll showed a Castle write-in campaign likely would have helped O'Donnell and hurt Democratic nominee Chris Coons.
"I listened closely to many viewpoints and carefully considered the option of staying in the race. While I would have been honored to represent Delaware in the U.S. Senate, I do not believe that seeking office in this manner is in the best interest of all Delawareans," he said in a statement. He said he and his wife Jane were ready to move on to the next stage of their lives.
The latest RealClearPolitics polling average has Chris Coons, the Democrat, in the lead against Republican contender Christine O'Donnell for Joe Biden's old Senate seat by 15.7%. But, as RCP notes in its analysis of the race, O'Donnell has "raised around $2 million, so she can't be written off in the general election." Let the games begin!

Perhaps he should endorse her?
Why squishes wanted to elect this f&%$wit is beyond me. He's obviously a man of character.

I agree. He should absolutely endorse her. What good is he doing by NOT endorsing her? It just looks sulky and he's out of the game either way. By endorsing her, he would at least seem graceful--speaking relatively.

Perhaps he won't endorse her for the same reason he decided to not run as a write-in. Either scenario could have actually helped her. Most likely he wants her to lose. Ideologically Castle may very well be closer to Coons than O'Donnell.

The GOP should, if they are smart, pressure him to endorse her. Does the GOP realize how much credibility they lose with conservatives, their base, when they put forward these venal candidates and ask us to hold our nose and vote for them, only to see them change party affiliation altogether (Specter, Jeffords, Crist) run as a write in candidate (Murkowski) endorse the Democrat opponent (Scozzaflava, Colin Powell, Chuck Hegal) or otherwise reveal their own candidacies to have been petty and personal after all?(Castle)
Do they realize these types undermine their position that the GOP is a big tent and that we should each pull for each other? It isn't a big tent at all, it is an umbrella that follows these guys around. The minute they get a drop of rain on their suits, they are gone.

I believe Castle's endorsement is of little import. Odonnel's win in the primary has done more than most seem to realize. Even if she does not win the genral every RINO in congress will be looking over their shoulder for the next 2 years. If a relative unknown with a psued-checkered past can unthrone a RINO with a political pedigree like Castle's, it should cause most RINOS to pause before supporting progessive causes. When the GOP estab. said teapartyers should work within the GOP to change it, I believe they thought it would not really happen. Lesson for RINOS - Be careful what you ask for!

Funny how one RINO, on losing the primary, decides not to run as a write-in when he finds out that staying in the race would help the Republican who beat him, while another decides to run as a write-in when it appears it would hurt the Republilcan who beat her. RINO is an apt term. So is Steyn's term DIABLO--Democrat in all but label only.
