"If you're looking to get more free stuff, free stuff you don't have to pay for, vote for the other guy -- that's what he's all about."

A cogent answer, demonstrating some spine, and there's not a TelePrompTer in sight.

What alien planet did you come from, and what have you done with our Mitt?

YES!  We need more of this from Mitt!

His campaign could cut this into an effective ad.

I agree with the other two commenters above.  If Romney showed more of this straight-talk I might even consider switching loyalties out of practical considerations.  This election cycle is very much about message (and of course someone with the spine to follow words with actions ... but you pays your dolla and you takes your chances).

It's not the specifics of this exchange that's important, but the underlying philosophical momentum that Romney is displaying here.  Right on.  This is so much better than "I'm not concerned about the poor, we've got lots of programs for them ..."

I am also getting endeared to his use of "the other guy" as a code for Obama.  It's very subtle, but I think there's a bit of wisdom there.  it makes Obama the man of the past, an afterthought.

Unfortunately, Mitt is not as fast on his feet as he might be. Note the pause between the question and the answer. A slightly better answer would be, "If you think Some other taxpayer should be paying for your contraceptives, vote for the other guy.  Of course, someday you'll be paying for somebody else's free stuff"

Your answer is how that kind of question/demand should be answered.  I would add a two additional sentences ... "And as more people receive more and more free stuff from the government, the Federal Government will eventually run out of other peoples money.  Our 1.5 trillion dollar deficit is proof that we probably already have".

If the question had been asked of Newt, it's almost certain that he would have answered as you suggest.

As a Non-Romney guy, all I have to say is, "I like it.  Keep it comin'!"

Nice answer--and he didn't have a teleprompter, either.

As we have discussed many times, about the tipping point, 47% of the population wants free stuff that they don't pay for, which must be the only reason that Mr Obama's approval is as high as it is, and why he may yet get re-elected.

If it had been asked of Christie, he'd have said "you already have free birth control -- it's called 'your personality.'"

The Bradley Polytechnic Institute was founded by philanthropist Lydia Moss Bradley in 1897 in memory of her husband Tobias and their six children, all of whom died early and suddenly, making Bradley a childless widow. The Bradleys had discussed establishing an orphanage in memory of their deceased children. After some study and travel to various institutions, Mrs. Bradley decided instead to found a school where young people could learn how to do practical things to prepare them for living in the modern world.

Like learn how to get like umm, yay, free birth control!

He said all the right things, but even here, this was not Newt, or any number of other, better speakers.  So?  Don't confuse Romney's crowd-awkwardness, his debating skills with insincerity.

If such moments were not few and far between, this one would be more reassuring.

If Romney comes out with more sound bites like this, I think Republicans will be able to get excited about him.  This is exactly what we need.
