Many conservatives seem to be in open rebellion against McConnell's plan for resolving the debt ceiling talks. He would allow President Obama to raise the debt ceiling three times in the next year for a total of $2.5 trillion. So what do Republicans get out of the deal? Well, the Wall Street Journal says they get to avoid the Hobson's choice of either going back on their campaign pledge by raising taxes, or taking the blame for any government shutdown as the U.S. nears a debt default.

McConnell explained that he's confident no deal that includes serious spending restraint is possible with President Obama. So what do you think? Is this a savvy plan or the worst thing any Republican has ever proposed?

For what it's worth, Gallup is reporting that nearly 6 in 10 Americans are following this debate closely and 53% of those watching very closely say they want their member of Congress to vote against the debt ceiling increase (only 37% want their member to vote for it).

Pilgrim:Those 70 million recipients combined with federal employees, contractors, state and local employees paid at least in part by federal funds, agricultural interests, subsidized business that would fail in a free market and all the rest are unlikely to see the long-term good of this country through the lens of self-interest. Only a cap on government borrowing will force reexamination of sustainability.  Republicans may end up hanging from lamp-posts but then we will know where we stand as a nation.  · Jul 13 at 12:23pm

Not all of us government employees are worthless. There are legitimate functions of government. Our problem is that we simply do not know what those are any longer. Perhaps slamming into the debt ceiling will force us as a nation to specifically define what are and what are not the legitimate functions/services of the national government.

What I want to see happen is for the Republican House to pass the bill of Cut Cap and Balance and send it over to the senate where in the Republicans in the Senate will support the proposal.

That leaves the ball in the court of the Democrats in the Senate and the President.

...

That's what I want to see done! · Jul 13 at 12:04pm

OK.  Let's say the Republicans do as you wish and Aug 3 rolls around while Reid refuses to bring the bill up for a vote.  I'm not even sure Cut, Cap and Balance addresses the debt ceiling directly, does it?  At that point, the president and his sock puppet Gheitner refuse to send out the checks to Granny and G.I. Joe.  I'm not sure under what mechanism they're allowed to do this, but I wouldn't put it past the most lawless administration in my lifetime.    And with the help of the supine media, Obama blames the whole thing on Republicans, who only get to voice their positions to the limited audience tuned to FOX News, talk radio and the editorial page of the WSJ.

Then what?

Then you put the blame where it belongs, with Harry Reid and Obama!

Or

Just give up and let the Democrats turn the U.S. into Greece!
Because compromising by half is how you continue the liefward trend.

In 2010, the Americans made a terrible, terrible mistake. They elected Republicans to force gridlock, stop Obama and Obamacare, and avoid America becoming the next Greece (but with no bailout available).

And now Republicans look everywhichway they can to find a way to pass the buck and avoid the responsibility.

Should Obama and Geithner stiff grandma, et. al., the House should pass a Bill of Impeachment the same day and dare the Senate not to convict. They can start with Geithner on the first instance, proceed to Obama on the second.
