Shutdown Looms, Obama Splits
If a federal government shutdown is to be avoided, today is crucial. That's because House rules require three days for legislation to be considered before a vote.
Yesterday, President Barack Obama ripped on Speaker of the House John Boehner for gameplaying and "quibbling around the edges" of the nation's fiscal problems. This morning, Boehner responded:
"The president is certainly entitled to disagree with our budget, but what exactly is his alternative? If he wants to have an 'adult conversation' about solving our fiscal challenges, he needs to lead instead of sitting on the sidelines."
That's not fair. he's not sitting on the sidelines. According to the Washington Post, he's leaving town!
A fiery President Obama insisted Tuesday that if he and congressional leaders couldn’t reach a deal to avert a government shutdown, “I want a meeting again tomorrow here at the White House.”
“I will invite the same folks that we invited today,” he added. “And if that doesn’t work, we’ll invite them again the day after that. And I will have my entire team available to work through the details of getting a deal done.”
Obama’s team may not include the president himself. Despite the impasse in Washington over federal spending, the president as of early Wednesday was scheduled to give two speeches outside of Washington: one on energy in the Philadelphia suburbs, then another Wednesday evening to a group of black political activists in New York.
The Post writes that while Obama has said he will not focus on his campaign in the next few months, his schedule may say otherwise.

Great, he's speaking on energy again? James rightly pointed out that everytime Obama opens his mouth on energy, gas prices go up.
Seriously, though, this guy is long on talk. But he does not want to compromise and get a deal done. He clearly agrees with Dr. Evil that if he just plays at working at this, and the government shuts down, Republicans will be blamed. But I say again: Barry, you and your minions in the house and senate should have done something months ago! So don't talk all hard work and rolled up sleeves now.

Re: Shutdown Looms, Obama Splits
What else can we say about a nation that puts up with this charade of leadership - and the tissue of lies that supports it - other than they are asleep or equally incoherent and incompetent?
Alexis deTocqueville said, "The end of the American Republic will come when the people realize they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury."
We're witnessing the final plundering of our national wealth and the demolition of our inheritance.

River,
You point out two problems: the leadership, and the people who vote the leadership. Presumably, the leadership have figured out that if they give out of the treasury to the people, the people will keep voting for them, to keep getting. Is the trend irreversible?

Re: Shutdown Looms, Obama Splits
It just shows the obvious -- the Democrats want the shutdown. Always have. They didn't pass their own budget, and that laid the trap for the shutdown.
It also shows that they're not serious about the responsibilities of government.
So, treat them that way. These are political adolescents, more interested in juvenile stunts than serious stewardship.

Good question, Ken. It could be reversible, but like an addict bottoming out, a genuine collapse would have to be felt. Many are calling California "The Lyndsey Lohan of states". I say we're a Lyndsey Lohan nation, addicted to public largesse. It's clear that a large number of Americans can't conceive of a good life without a state or federal check.

Re: Shutdown Looms, Obama Splits
I don’t think the Republicans have anything to fear from a shutdown, especially if they use every opportunity to explain just why the government is shut down, i.e., because Obama and the Democrats want it to be shut down. They want it because they care more about their political strategy than the fiscal crisis that the country faces.

Just when I think the Obama administration can't get any worse, I find myself once again gobsmacked by the fact that this great nation elected this complete tool as president. Thank you, Obama voters!
Imagine if he were a conservative this buffoonish and incompetent (first black president be damned), the media would have run him out of town on a rail a year ago.

This is a radical break from the past that deserves comment. In this case Mr. Obama isn't even voting "present".
