Over at Powerline, John Hinderaker gives some details of a congressional meeting with Kenneth Melson, the acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. This is a meeting without the DOJ lawyers present, so the director could speak his mind to Congress.

Part of the information released:

The evidence we have gathered raises the disturbing possibility that the Justice Department not only allowed criminals to smuggle weapons but that taxpayer dollars from other agencies may have financed those engaging in such activities. While this is preliminary information, we must find out if there is any truth to it. According to Acting Director Melson, he became aware of this startling possibility only after the murder of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry and the indictments of the straw purchasers, which we now know were substantially delayed by the u.s. Attorney’s Office and Main Justice.

Excuse me, but if this is true, then this administration is guilty of something pretty big. It paid for guns that were used to kill an agent.

If Iran-Contra was so bad, why is this not as bad?

updated - The NY Times has the story on page 14, the San Fran Chronicle on page 12, it's barely visible.

The story isn't even on Drudge. Remember the media will decide what you read.

Probably be a good exercise to see if the story was carried by any of the networks, any of the AP /Reuters/ etc, any of the big newspapers, or will they successfully drown it with speculation about Casey Anthony's new careers ?

Because Democrat-'progressives' are running things, and everyone knows their intentions are always good. The Regime Media says so. They have moral superiority. When things go wrong it can't be their fault.

I checked NYT, WaPo, and Reuters last night and nary a mention of the case.

Did you read the letter from Issa's office. Oh me oh my....this could get ugly.

Update: Daily Caller has the story today.

Pajamas Media has done the most extensive reporting but it has been mentioned at many sites as well as on Fox News, the only TV news I follow. The problem has been that the justice department has been stonewalling.

Interestingly, somewhere on the internet about 6 months ago, I saw someone mention that based on past historical precedents, we were overdue for a major  presendential scandal.

I told my mostly apolitical/left-leaning friend about this story this weekend.  His reaction: "Wow, that would be outrageous if it were true.  But I haven't heard about it in the news, so...it's probably not true."

Sigh.

NRO has had some good coverage of Project Gunrunner and its' bastard offspring  Operation Fast and Furious, my the names alone I think would have someone questiong the wisdom of these actions, however you are correct widespread coverage has indeed been lacking. There appears to be some hope within the administration that the whole disaster will just fade away while whistleblowers are quietly let go.

Keep in touch with that friend.  When the proverbial excrement hits the fan, probably after Obama's term ends, you can remind your friend he heard it from you first.

This was a powerful factor in my political conversion.  Conservatives seemed to know more about what was happening than anyone else.

Interesting point. I believe liberals don't want to know what is happening.

I believe the liberals having digested the idea that Obama won the election fairly, thus vindicating them, have entered a realm of fantasy that allows them to ignore the facts from here on in.They don't care or they are complicit.

and read Senator Grassley's and Rep. Issa's letter to Eric Holder.  The obvious attempts to evade Congressional scrutiny and oversight are unsettling.  If the Congress cannot obtain the truth from the executive branch, there is no chance of constitutional government.

I can well imagine that the hopes of the administration included making a case for further attempts to restrict gun ownership and transfers in the US in violation of the Second Amendment.  Let's hope that this produces a firestorm and that more and more federal employees come forward and speak the truth (and that some of those attempting to suppress it are indicted).

However, two days after he told Acting Deputy Attorney General Cole about serious issues involving lack of information sharing, the Wall Street Journal reported that unnamed sources said that Melson was about to be ousted.

Once again, we see how news agencies act as government resources, rather than watchdogs.

They're trying to sweep it under the rug, but since Melson went around the DOJ and talked to investigators anyway, this deal is going to get so big that they'll never be able to contain it.

He implicates ATF, DOJ, DEA, FBI, and others in the executive branch, including the new revelation that not only were the guns allowed to walk under orders, we paid for some or most of them to be purchased in the first place.

Let that one sink in for a moment.

Not only were we letting the guns that we knew about go across the boarder, but we were also paying for the damned things.

Mark my words, this entire deal was an attempt to put actual statistics to the claim that "90% of guns in Mexico come from the US through straw purchases".

They didn't have the data to back that claim before, so they take money and lives and spend them making the data they need.

Treason just doesn't quite cover it.

The only people who rely on the MSM these days are liberals, dumb people and old folks who grew up watching the alphabet networks and thinking Uncle Walter gave them the straight goods. That's why polls say the media is down there with used car salesman on the who-do-you-trust scale.

Representative Issa, co-author of the letter I identified and the head of the House Committee pursuing this is appearing on Bret Baier's program on Fox News tonight at 6.00 EDT.  I hope that all Ricochevians will watch and encourage their friends so to do.

Fox needs all the encouragement that we can give them to continue pushing this story.

And, parenthetically, I agree with CoolHand: this was an attempt to torpedo the Second Amendment.

This is quite serious. The potential for additional mischief is substantial.

However I can only hold 1 pitchfork and 1 torch. If I try to use more torches I tend to burn the wrong target (along with myself). There are far more serious issues and the evidence already exists.

Unless you can convince me that this will be the equivalent of the tax laws that convicted Al Capone this issue is way down on my list of High Crimes.

T. Jefferson Parker has written at least three recent novels about gun trafficking at the border that combine the typical police procedural novel with something out of Mad Max: Return to the Thunderdome. He would probably think this story is too far fetched to be believed.

It seems a day cannot go by and their is one more thing to worry about the current administration.
