Doom Daily

A few years ago John Derbyshire published We Are Doomed because, as he states, "happy talk is for children, fools and leftists."

There is certainly plenty to be depressed about. Look at the poll numbers of the Republican governors elected last November. All of them are fighting the good fight, doing what needs to be done and all are losing the PR war to the left. This idea that the day of reckoning had finally arrived and that we were finally going to convince our fellow citizens of the unsustainablity of the welfare state seems to be a pipe dream.

The media war on Congressional Republicans is in full swing. Mitch McConnell seems on the verge of retreat. The President is raising money hand-over-fist. Mike Murphy says that the changing demographics means the day of the RINO is a day without end. The Supreme Court is one heart attack from a liberal majority and a free hand to the statists. The West declines, the Communist East rises and Iran is about to go nuclear.

Is there any reason to be optimistic?

The money campaign for O'Bama is not going well, and is far below target. He's starting to crack, i.e., "Don't call my bluff!" LOL! He's so pathetic. Those voters who haven't become zombies yet see what's happening.

I'd really like to see the specifics of the polls. I've heard the same thing about my WI Governor Walker & the R. State House & Senate but in the 6 months he's been in office, we've gone from a projected $3.2 billion  defict to a projected $300 million surplus. Our unemployment is below the national ave. (approx 7.7%), we've gone up from the near bottom of businees friendly states (43rd?) to 23rd. Taxes aren't being increased (some lowered)

I am P.O.'d with the left/Democrats in this state and their over the top antics but I'm very hopeful of this state's future. That's why I'd be very curious to see the details of this poll.

You forgot to mention the looming disaster of ObamaCare -- unless we can get rid of Obama and the Democrat-controlled Senate in 2012.  Also, we have our appalling illegitimacy rates which further entrench the dependency and ignorance (hence, more voters who will be easily manipulated by Democrats) of many in the next generation.

If we cannot succeed in 2012 and show voters that our policies are more effective (like KT mentioned is happening in WI), and can show that we deserve the credit, (yes, I know: there is the rub) then I agree with Derbyshire.  We really will be doomed.

Surely you've heard the saying "fat, dumb, and happy." With enough beer and pie it is a reasonable goal.

Not that I can think of.

Claire had a similar question earlier today - it seems the only solution is to turn off the computer, smart phone, ipad and go for a walk.

Salt and vinegar kettle chips and Diet Mountain Dew (please, no comments about cognitive dissonance.  I know, my wife has already explained it to me).

Richard Weaver of Ideas Have Consequences fame described a pathology that liberals tend to have when they embark on big government projects.  Against all historical knowledge about how those plans work, they have "hysterical optimism."

Well, I'm adopting an attitude of hysterical optimism.  We're going to beat Obama, take the Senate, keep the House, and repeal Obamacare.  And that's just for starters.

Oh, and chocolate-covered cashews (or, in a pinch, peanuts) will drive the blues away as well.

I have a feeling that when our economy collapses under its' own weight we'll all be holding hands and singing  REMs refrain  "It's the end of the world as we know it. And I feel fine."  Hopefully their will be moonpies and Little Debbie cream filled oatmeal cookies in the future.

In other areas of life I'm quite optimistic; in the political/cultural arena I'm fatalistic.  I'm just waiting for the next revolution so we can start over fresh.

You can come out and work in the shop with me.

Then you'll have a couple of smashed knuckles and some new curse words to go with your beer gut and pie induced coma.

Fat, drunk, and barked up is no way to go through life, son.

That ain't easy to do in my business. The MSM writes out my paycheck. (One of H&R Block's 17 reasons to blog anonymously...)

Free markets and political liberty will eventually prevail -- history is undeniably moving in the direction.  We may have to wait 50 years but we should get there.

And there is no way that an incumbent President can be re-elected with unemployment above 8% and the popular perception that the country is on the wrong path.  Obama is toast in 2012 -- then the question will be how to undo the damage.
