Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head at point-blank range today outside a Tucson, Ariz., grocery store where she was holding a campaign event. At least 12 others were also shot.

I'm stunned.

I'm so sorry to hear that. Not diminishing in any way what that murderer did today, but I think Jared Loughner was probably flat out nuts, and I suspect that one day we'll all be more angry with some individual, or agency, that saw the danger that Loughner posed, had the chance to have Loughner detained for cause, maybe last week, last month, or whenever, and didn't do it, just passed the buck. People don't get that screwed up in one day. I'm guessing there were plenty of warnings. May Phyllis have the eternal peace that we all seek for ourselves.

I don't know if he was a Palin or Marx supporter, and it doesn't matter tonight, even if others try to make it matter.  Politics can come off the back burner when the important things cool down. All that matters is the skill of the doctors, the peace and comfort of those close to the victims, and the mercy of God.  Prayers for you, George, and everyone else affected.

AmishDude: Hillbuzz has examples of targets being used in maps the Dems used and the word "bullseye" used with respect to Giffords herself in the context of primarying her.

There is a lot of good stuff being posted over at Hillbuzz:

They are suggesting that, if Loughner was politically motivated at all, he may have shot Giffords for being too conservative.

Kenneth: Sad.  Shocking.

Let us just hope that this tragedy won't serve as justification for our public servants to further isolate themselves from the citizenry.  · Jan 8 at 11:48am

Kenneth's point is an excellent one and, possibly, the most important one to be made, after one offers condolences.

Mr. Neil (?sp) Livingston justs made the same one on Fox News.  It will significantly change our body politic for the worse if our representatives go about in armored cars surrounded by gunslingers.

I wouldn't worry about it. I don't think there is much danger in the foreseeable future that politicians who have any courage at all will behave like that. There is no rational reason to fear this is anything but an isolated incident, the hysteria of Olbermann and his fellow travelers aside.

As for those who might resort to such behavior, I have little use for politicians who are such cowards that a single incident like this would trigger it. And I think their political opponents would be quick to exploit such behavior.

We are not a banana republic or Pakistan.

So sorry for your loss, George.  My thoughts are with you and your family.

The shooter sounds to me like a LaRouchie gone even more wacko than Lyndon's rank and file.  Whoever Jared Lougher is, he's definitely not sane.  And it frosts me that the MSM is already spinning this as an inevitable conclusion to Sarah Palin's "bloodthirsty" political target campaign.

This had nothing to do with Sarah.  This had nothing to do with the right.  And it had nothing to do with the left.  Lougher's nuts.  Period.

As someone mentioned earlier, Jared Lougher seems to be a latter-day Lee Harvey Oswald - a maniacal political loner furiously angry at his own irrelevance.  It is irresponsible in the extreme to link him to Sarah Palin.

It isn't clear to me by his Youtube postings that he even knew who Giffords was.  He's a loony.  It's all about him and, whatever politics he locked onto was imprecise and fueled his delusions.

etoiledunord: A friend of mine from high school became schizophrenic in his twenties, and it was frightening. He was never violent, but he just became completely divorced from reality. Nothing he said made any sense, he saw things nobody else saw, he heard voices, but to him, he was the sane one. He was put on medication, eventually, and got much better, but he was never the same person. · Jan 8 at 2:42pm

I really appreciate your direct move toward empathy in this situation. I took a look at the youtube clips earlier this morning and the first thing that came to my mind was that this kid was deeply disturbed.

I served as an administrative pastor in Austin TX. I once had to manage a difficult situation involving a schizophrenic young man. I genuinely cared for him, and seeing him deteriorate was heartbreaking. What little I saw on YouTube of the shooter was eerily similar to what I saw in my friend.

By the mercy of God my friend received good care and did not harm himself or others.

What happened today was terrible, and devasting to all involved.

Still waiting for your answer regarding "Send them Home."

I'm not required, nor am I inclined, to respond to such a silly meme

Nope, You aren't required to respond at all.

But you reveal your total lack of understanding of the left, and the echo chamber of the MSM and their willingness to expand upon any meme forwarded by the left when you refer to what I said as silly.

How many other points of "Conventional Wisdom" today, were Silly Memes not 10 or 15 years ago.

There was a time that conventional wisdom would have called anyone refering to "targeted" districts as being incitement to a shooting as a Silly Meme.  But today you call it Poor Judgement.  Because the left has used it today, and there is an echo chamber making it out to be just that.

Reasonable people in days gone by would have laughed at it, but NOT today.

Andy what you call my silly meme today will be conventional wisdom tomorrow when the left and the MSM echo chamber decide to attack on that logic.

So, no, don't respond, because quite clearly you don't understand the left.

Oh dear me...

This quote took this whole thing from abstract and made it personal.

I am very sorry for your loss.

"It should not be, but the media, under the guise of “a full exposition” of the evil in Arizona, is back to subtly and not so subtly pinning the blame for the attempted assassination of the Congresswoman and the related shootings on the tea party movement, Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, me, you, and everyone right of center."

The above is from Eric Erickson's special post this morning.  His whole captures many of the points we have been discussing.
