Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head at point-blank range today outside a Tucson, Ariz., grocery store where she was holding a campaign event. At least 12 others were also shot.

I'm stunned.

The shooting occurred just a few miles from my parents' home. This shopping area is one that they use from time to time. Once I heard the news of the shooting I called them immediately. They are watching the coverage at home, in shock as we all are.

Rest in Peace.

12:13 update:  The above was premature.  Pray that she pulls through.

Sad.  Shocking.

Let us just hope that this tragedy won't serve as justification for our public servants to further isolate themselves from the citizenry.

There are conflicting reports. Some said she had died; others give hope, that she's alive in surgery. Prayers for her recovery and for her family; she's married to an astronaut and has a young child, I'm told. Also, check out this Politico interview of Giffords from 2008, which I found through a Ben Smith Tweet. She seems so down to earth and likable. Anything we say in these times can seem trite, but this is so very tragic and sad.

Awful, simply awful.  I am reading conflicting reports about the Congresswoman's condition.  I pray that she is still alive and can recover.

Unfortunately, now too many will try to make sense out of the senseless and use it for political purposes.

My thoughts exactly. Fortunately they confirmed that she is alive in critical condition, heading into surgery.

The wretched MSM, biased and cynical as ever, is already gearing up to put an anti-conservative spin on this story.  They are literally hoping and praying that the shooter is a rightwing whacko.

However, the attack was carried out with an automatic weapon — in Arizona.  And Rep. Giffords is a strong advocate of border security.  If this incident is related in any way to Mexican drug violence, the border issue (and, by extension, the immigration issue) is going to become hot.

Sarah's condolences and statement of Prayers for Peace and Justice for the families has already been Flamed by the leftists.

They are all focusing on this being her fault because she put Crosshairs on this congressowoman and used terms like "Reload" when talking about them.

I had to stop reading the venom and hatered of all those people who are against the hatered.

Some rabid lefties are already making assumptions, engaging in knee-jerk political opportunism, and blaming conservatives, the Tea Party, FOXnews, wingnuts, etc.

They are despicable and beneath contempt.

I just hope that this tragic event and other events of the past week that have targeted state and federal officials in Maryland and D.C. would encourage people who comment on sites like this to write with more restraint and temperance when criticizing state and federal governments. Words are powerful and can incite the irrational and unhinged into doing foolish and destructive things.

Stuff like this is coming out. At best, the crosshairs and such were completely metaphorical, in which case they displayed massive and near idiotic misjudgment. At worst (i.e., if there was a hint of seriousness to their intent), they were reprehensibly evil.

The "irrational and unhinged" who are prone to murder are only looking for an excuse and can always find one.

Right. I forgot to include Palin in the list of those being blamed.

Amen to that. The "something very, very bad is going to happen" saber-rattling is pathetically easy to squawk about from the safety of an anonymous user id.

Gov. Palin deserves major stupidity points if she was aware of and allowed those representations. I'm still clinging to hope that she was somehow disconnected from these images (although the big signature at the bottom would suggest otherwise). Any evidence of that?

Well, the choice of crosshairs wasn't the wisest one.  Anyone could have told her that - if she was interested in soliciting sage advice.

Balderdash!

I'm getting tired of having to apologize for using metaphors that people don't like.

Sarah Palin is NOT responsible for the actions of an unhinged idiot, and I'm not going to give another inch or apologize for using imagery that would have been perfectly acceptable 50 years ago when you were able to make judgements about BAD BEHAVIOR!

Peggy Noonan has a brilliant column out regarding the fact that People Don't Know How to ACT Anymore.  This is what happens when you take a perfectly reasonable imagery in a campaign and make it "poor judgement" because an idiot cannot understand the difference between conceptualization and actions.

It was a campaign regarding targeted districts.  I saw Bombsights the first time I looked at her map.  That didn't encourage me to go out and fly a B-17 over the district and let go with a passel of 500 pounders, nor did I think she even remotely had such an action in mind.

NO MORE SELF CENSOSHIP!
