Full disclosure: I've never actually seen an entire episode of "Dancing With the Stars," though I've watched a few clips of Bristol Palin online. She's not great, but she's likable and she appears to have sufficient rhythm and poise to be competitive. More importantly, she's charming and winsome enough to build a loyal following of folks who want her to succeed, and in these kinds of reality shows, that's more important than actual talent. (To wit: The smarmy Tim Urban from last season's "American Idol." Don't recall him? I'll help you:

Sorry.)

OK, back to Bristol. She's not as bad a dancer as that kid is a singer, and he lasted for weeks on "Idol," much to my annoyance. So she's certainly not stinky enough to prompt somone to load a shotgun and blast out his TV screen. Unless he's a drunken, redneck Palin hater.

You'd think a guy like this would be watching the fishing channel.

Ha! Until I clicked through to the linked article, I was under the impression that it was the American idol kid who shot his gun at the TV screen. That would've been a much funnier story. As it is, it's just bizarre.

We drunken rednecks object to the mis-representation that we would ever, ever watch dancing with the whatevers...

I've watched Dancing With the Stars and the English version Strictly Come Dancing - which also features the legendary Len Goodman as a judge - for many years. Bristol has become very good, and received very high scores a number of times. She did a fantastic and very memorable Tango, one of the most difficult dances to pull off. She had no dance or performance experience before this, which put her at an enormous disadvantage to the stage-savvy and highly successful Brandy, who started off well immediately.

The judges were merciless with Bristol early on, and everyone thought she was toast. She was often in tears. But she worked through the pain and humiliation with admirable strength and courage. It's a great tribute to her that the voting audience - which is overwhelmingly female - picked her to stay on at this level. Technically, she's never been as perfect as Brandy. But art is rarely - perhaps never - about technical perfection.

Bristol has great legs and a voluptuous, sexy body. Not the perfect slim body that Brandy has. I think women found Bristol more sympathetic than Brandy, more like them.

Man, that Trace Urdan can sing. Oh, wait..

The old guy doesn't appear to be especially political. He just was upset that politics was interfering in his favorite show. "Golfurndit politics!" he said before discharging his piece. Mainly, ahem, he just got a "bad ice cube" and was thus tired and emotional.

Is vandalizing one's own property a crime? There's a second amendment issue here.

I don't think it had anything to do with Bristol Palin. It was just this particular man's time to grab a shotgun and blast his television. The urge to do that is slowly building up in all of us. We will all eventually act on that urge if we live long enough and can still pull a trigger!

The guy is from Dane County (i.e. Madison area). Chances are he is either liberal, or communist.

I think that the Experian Simmons study on partisanship and television viewing goes a long way to explain Bristol Palin's success on the show.

The show is one of the top 15 most popular shows among Republican viewers. Add to this bias the natural American bias to root for the underdog, and you have a wonderful recipe for success.

Personally, I'm not a fan of Strictly Come Dancing as it runs opposite Top Gear, but I can appreciate those who want Bristol to have a nice experience to balance out the attacks she has endured from the media.

The people keep voting her in even though she's not enjoying her stint at DWTS.

And did you see the latest target of the anti-Palinistas? 16-yr old Willow Palin and her "homophobic rant"

A couple of evenings ago I wandered over to the comments at the DWTS website, where hundreds of Palin-haters were crying over Bristol's success. One of those Fulbright Scholars even said that Palin and her supporters are "embaseales." You can't make that stuff up.
