Sex Scandal--Former-Soviet Style!
All of America, I'm sure, is glued to its seat--so to speak--by the breaking sex scandal in Azerbaijan. This is my personal favorite part:
In a commercial showed widely on Lider TV, viewers were told to watch the evening news show "Seda." It was during this program that the video of Ahmedov and a woman having sex was shown. The announcer says that what is happening in the video is a result of the "asymetric policy from the West."
While engaging in oral sex, the Lider TV moderator said "we have to show this to the Western world, especially to France, so they know that their methods are very close to our opposition."
I reckon the French will be deeply sobered by this realization.

Re: Sex Scandal--Former-Soviet Style!
I'm a little confused as to what part of this is a scandal, besides the grammatical faux pas of saying "showed" instead of "shown". The article does not mention if the people in question are married to spouses other than each other and later on in the same article mentions that this same newspaper "outs" people for homosexual people, whereas these people are, apparently, heterosexual.
"Methods close to our opposition." Unintentionally brilliant obliqueness.

Oral sex, huh? Well, at least they can't blame Bush.

...and I'm confused about who was doing what to whom: "While engaging in oral sex, the Lider TV moderator said, 'blah, blah...' " This suggests the moderator was engaging in the act while issuing commentary. It's either a dangling modifyer, or Clintonianly kinky.

Okay, remember the reporter is almost certainly an Azeri. Trust me, it is very easy to make grammatical mistakes when endeavoring to move between English and that language family. Cut the fellow some slack.
(This from the woman who the other night apparently told the local grocer, "What a handsome fruit-seller you are" instead of "What a lovely fruit selection this is." I would never have understood why he looked so taken aback had the friend who was with me not subsequently explained.)

Cut the fellow some slack.
You must bear with us. Its hard to come off a discussion of Javelin missiles, war music and the Thai Bhat and be understanding when some fellow mangles the Queen's english, especially when we're a bunch of stump toothed, in bred, gun clingin', religion lovin' neanderthals.

So was he indeed a handsome fruit-seller? Freud, slips, and all that.
Re: Sex Scandal--Former-Soviet Style!
No, although the fruit selection was genuinely attractive.
It was just one of those mistakes that are so easy to make in a really foreign language.

Wow, talk about your "unintended consequences." Foreign Policy is a tricky thing! I'm sure that's what he told his wife..."it was the asymmetric policy!".
So to the lengthy list of "things the French must be shown" we can Azerbaijani oral sex. And their goal is to shame the French by showing them a sex act? Oh sure, that'll work!
Should someone tell them how many generations of English, Germans and even Americans have tried to show the French a thing or two and come up with no result?

It is widely known that such a result of an "asymetric Western policy" is not French, but is, in fact, Spanish. I cite Steely Dan's Aja (1977), "I've Got the News".
Back to you, Dan.
