Server Migration Tonight

As promised last week, we are moving to new servers to speed up the site and resolve several other issues. After a lot of work over the last week on caching issues, merging in changes from development, and testing, I think we are ready.
The migration to new servers will begin around 4 AM Eastern, or 1 AM Pacific. Ricochet.com will be down, probably for several hours. So get your fix now!
Here's what you can expect after the migration:
- Faster load speeds. In our testing, typically at least twice as fast (when the page is in cache). Some pages may still occasionally load slowly, but that is because they have not recently been viewed and thus are no longer in the cache.
- Much faster publish times! In our testing, comments go up in 6-10 seconds (conservatively) instead of 30 seconds or more on the current system. I've seen times as low as 2 seconds.
- A few new features that have been waiting for a good migration to hop onto.
- Some unforeseen bugs that will inevitably pop up in spite of our testing. So please hang tight! We'll fix them soon.
Some technical details may be forthcoming, later, for those who are curious.

Yay! Hopefully comment page selection will be duplicated at the top of the comments as part of this. I blame "she who must not be named" and Kenneth for this being a desirable change.

Be sure to block the words "Sarah Palin" too.

I believe the Ink Spots suit the occasion. And they're not bugs, they're features. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger.
Though like Dr Victor Fries, I would like my capacity for love restored. That'd be neat.

As a fellow member of the IT field, I hope everything goes according to the initial plan.

Re: Server Migration Tonight
I could turn this feature on in 5 minutes-- and it is a commonly requested feature. However, from the beginning, Ricochet was designed to be different than other sites on the Internet. We haven't yet fully achieved it, but our goal is to foster more genuine, deeper, more thoughtful and more civil conversation. Having the comment page links at the top just encourages skipping to the end, ranting, and leaving.
I call that "drive-by commenting" and it is the bane of most public comment boards on hot topics. No one ever takes the time to read anyone else's comments; they only want to say their piece (not realizing no one else will read it either). Not a conversation by any means.
However, we do have comment filters (seldom used-- they need a redesign) for those rare cases when you find someone in our community, er, problematic. When you filter out a user's comments, that selection is supposed to follow you around the site.
Enjoy great conversations, and come back often!

Hmm, that sounds like it could be useful...
I agree with, um, encouraging people to read the other comments - I generally do.
Re: Server Migration Tonight
Any tweaks on preview? I declined to pull the trigger on a post tonight because the embedded YouTube vid didn't show up in preview, even though the URL was kosher.

Re: Server Migration Tonight
Preview has had some issues that we hope are resolved in this migration, but no guarantees right now, as that was not the primary focus of the migration. Let us know how it works after a few days!
