We've got plenty of elder and middle aged statesmen and women here on Ricochet, but we felt the next generation of pundits had so far been under represented on the feeds and airwaves of the site. So we asked (OK, we begged) Ricochet All-Star Troy Senik to help us pull together a panel of new voices with some of the sharpest, most accomplished young conservatives in America.. The result is our newest podcast The Young Guns.

In this hour, we're joined by Ricochet’s Diane Ellis, National Affairs’ Meghan Clyne, and Keith Urbahn, Chief of Staff to former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld (oh yeah – he also broke that little story about the death of Osama bin Laden on Twitter). We tackle the vacuity of “youth issues” (and come to consensus on the malign effects of “Rock the Vote”), the 2012 presidential election (wherein two of our panelists pledge to invade the privacy of a potential candidate), the fight over the debt ceiling, and the future of the GOP’s foreign policy inclinations. And we wrap it all up with our heroes and villains of the week – is it possible that Michelle Obama made it into both categories on a Ricochet podcast?

Let us know what you think.

Cool.

There are too many podcasts to fit into the sidebar these days. Y'all need a Podcast page with a distinct link, rather than just the Site Map (which I had ignored entirely until now).

Can someone define "middle-aged"? With a number, not platitudes.

40 through 55? Give or take.  Once you qualify for the senior discount at Denny's, you're no longer middle-aged.

Professor, If it's the show I'm thinking of (there are a few words that could fit in those spaces -- help me Sajak!),  we have that show already, and you've been on it. Twice.

No way 40 is middle-aged! I'd say 45 minimum, 50 at a push (said he, despairingly). And by the way, I didn't really mean the "no platitudes" thing.

Not under its proper name.

Well, you can define middle-aged in technical terms -- the middle of a normal lifespan would place you around 40.  Or you can define it in general lifestyle trends:  Married, or divorced, or divorced and remarried, with 2.2 children + 0.7 stepchildren, a dog, and a mortgage.

I'll settle for 45.

Paul, meet me at a truck stop and we'll chat.  Coffee's on me.

Middle age begins the moment your back first goes out and ends the moment even the government must acknowledge you're a senior citizen and send you a Social Security check.

Or perhaps it begins the moment you first hear a song you grew up with played on a "Classics" station and ends when your hearing relies on batteries.

I was horrified a few years ago when one of my teenaged daughters asserted that she "loved to listen to oldies" and I realized she was talking about 80s music.

Oh, the humanity!  The unfairness of it all!  Those rotten kids don't even allow us our illusions...

I told my wife that it began at 30 (when she was 29).

If you ever get to Michigan, get in touch. You can find my e-mail by going to my website: www.paularahe.com. I would drink that coffee with pleasure.

We live on the M-99. We could even provide the coffee.

I turned it off at "yankee fan."

Wow. I was totally fine with not being considered young enough to be on The Young Guns until I realized that you all must think I'm over 40. I'm old, but I'm not that old!

Or is it just that I'm not cool enough? That must be it. I'm not cool enough to be a Young Gun. You got me there.

I look forward to it.  I don't get up to Michigan as much as in previous years, but my company should send me that direction once the temperature takes a nose dive.  I tend toward seasonal extremes in this job.
