Yesterday, Rob suggested a thought experiment: Pretend you're a savvy Democrat and a loyal Leftist. What advice would you give Obama?

The problem with the question is that you can't be both at this point. They're like matter and anti-matter. If you're a savvy Democrat, you've got to be able to see the writing on the wall. In fact, you don't even have to be especially savvy--you merely have to not be completely, utterly blind--to see that the voters don't seem to like all that Left-wing stuff, when it really comes down to it.

If Obama persists in attempting to pursue an aggressive Left-wing agenda right now, first, it will obviously fail; he can't; and second, he'll take his whole party down with him, and for a very long time, at that. So if you're a loyal Democrat, you're going to advise Obama to cooperate with the Republicans to the greatest extent possible, sacrifice your fantasies about the terrific Left-wing legacy you're going to leave, and put the long-term good of your party ahead of ideology. If the economy recovers significantly before the next election, the Democrats will be beneficiaries as much as the Republicans. If it doesn't, at least it won't look as if it's all the Democrats' fault.

The most rational response yet. Too bad it won't be heeded.

Yes, what you suggest would be a rational course of action. But since when has the leftist agenda been rational? Let them double down. Eventually the fever will break and the patient will recover.

When Obama was asked today by an Indian student about the historic Democrat losses in the mid-term, Obama said it was a good thing. This is so deeply imbecilic it is creepy. This man is our Commander and Chief for another 26 months and change.

The problem for savvy Democrats and for loyal Leftists as I see it is that they both want to act in the best interests of their party. That's a problem because the best interests of their party are NOT the best interests of America, and the American people by and large know that. They've seen what's gone for on the past 22 months and they understand that the Dems will not act in America's interests. They know - they reallllllly know - what Rahmbo Dead Fish Emanuel meant with his "never let a crisis go to waste" comment. It wasn't about using a crisis to fix systemic problems in America that were seemingly unfixable in normal times. No, the Dems want to use crises to entrench themselves in power forever. And enough of the electorate now knows this.

So the loyal Leftists will continue to push the Dem car over the cliff (because they can't help themselves) and the savvy Democrats will let them, so that a more America-friendly, voter-respected Democrat majority can emerge.

Kinda like what happened to The Stupid Party last Tuesday.

I agree with Claire's analysis and dittoheadadt's take. The intersection of the two groups is very small, and that doesn't leave a lot of manuvering room. And very little of that room is going to be palatable to a significant part of the electorate.

I console myself with the idea that the left-wing of the Democrat party will have to come up with a complete change in paradigm and adopt some favored conservative policy under a "revolutionary" flag. But after 80 years of sclerosis, a change in paradigm's gotta hurt.

There is the option of holding tight and waiting for the GOP to shot itself in the foot. Given recent history I find this to be a perfectly rational strategy. If the GOP establishment were half as committed to small government principles as O is to big government this would not be the case. I think there is a good chance that the GOP establishment will still manage to alienate the TP’s enough to spawn a 3rd party movement in which case 2012 belongs to O. Rumor has it Cornyn will remain head of the Senate election committee and the trinity in the House can’t seem to find room for a women or a TPer in the leadership. Does O-care cover self inflicted gunshot wounds?

Dr. Egon Spengler: There's something very important I forgot to tell you.
Dr. Peter Venkman: What?
Dr. Egon Spengler: Don't cross the streams.
Dr. Peter Venkman: Why?
Dr. Egon Spengler: It would be bad.
Dr. Peter Venkman: I'm fuzzy on the whole good/bad thing. What do you mean, "bad"?

Rational course of action - Obama could resign and take up the fellowship position of Harvard he so desparately wants. They might even make him president there.

Then Joe Biden can take over, and gaff the democrats to oblivion before choking on both his socks.

I wouldn't give them the benefit of the doubt. The charity and grace that our parents and churches teach us to treat other with really don't apply to people who would have our parents removed and our churches closed do they ?

Politics and religion don't intersect too well do they ? SInce the Holy Roman Empire disbanded their army, hasn't it all been mercy this and submission that ?

These folks just tried to take your doctors away, close your businesses down, and take whatever money you wanted to leave your children !!

And you want to give them advice........If we forget that these people never learn and that anything we do to help will be forgotten faster than MLK's republican party membership, then we need to sit down and take a deep breath and clench our teeth and go take back the government as fast as possible. And then dismantle as much of it as we can. Better to zero base this thing rather than pass out the dough at the Farragut metro stop.

liberal jim's right. For all their talk about fairness, Democrats play dirty politics. They'll do everything they can to fool and undermine Republicans. If the GOP fails in the next four or six years to prevent the party from splintering, then Democrats won't need to restrain themselves to regain power.

I don't know if it's true, but someone told me this month's election weeded out more moderate Democrats than liberal loons. A move toward the center is not inevitable.

You know when Bill Clinton was first Elected he liked to have Fleetwood Mac's Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow played when he walked onto a stage. (I'm a big fan of Fleetwood Mac but I still can't listen to that song to this day becaus of of him.)

I propose a new song for Mr. Obama to play when he walks onto a stage, or into a room, or anywhere he goes. He'd be will advised to listen to it too.

It's an oldie by Steeler's Wheel Star!

Nowhere Man is a good choice, but it doesn't serve as the warning BHO needs which is the meme of this thread.

"They Read in the press all about your success,

They believe Every word they've been told

After all you've been through tell me what will you do

When you find yourlself out in the cold"

Includes both his story, and his warning.

I'd be happy with Johnny Paycheck's signature song.

He knows that they're the fools.

Obama will NOT run for re-election in 2012 (think LBJ, except Ed Rendell asks him to step aside). Democrat party's self preservation demands action. The total disaster of this past election, illustrated by the state houses in Michigan and Wisconson (democrat strongholds since FDR), have decimated the Democratic Party for the next 10 years. Ed Rendell, Evan Bayh, and Bill Clinton are looking at the destruction of their party since it has been hijacked by the far left. The power brokers in Washington and state houses see their influence gone. California and New York are basket cases, soon to fall into an abyss due to unions, environmentalists and far left forces. Then they see a White House with Obama and Valerie Jarrett (no core Democrat party heavy hitters).

Check this stunning article from Politico.

"Congressional Democrats consider him distant and blame him for their historic defeat on Tuesday. Democratic state party leaders scoff at what they see as an inattentive and hapless political operation. Democratic lobbyists feel maligned by his holier-than-thou take on their profession. His own Cabinet — with only a few exceptions — has been marginalized." http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1110/44812.html#ixzz14j0LfEej
