Emily Esfahani Smith and Ben Domenech are back with your bimonthly dose of pop culture! In this edition of the Acculturated podcast, they talk to The Weekly Standard's Jonathan Last, an enthusiast and expert of comic books, video games, and sci-fi movies. Last is just the man you will want to hear from in light of the recent--some would say tragic--news about the Star Wars franchise (if you're not caught up on that story, be sure to check out Ben Domenech's piece, "George Lucas Just Saved Star Wars by Firing George Lucas").
Emily, Ben, and Jonathan chat about the future of Star Wars, the best (and worst) film in Lucas' series, whether Hollywood is in a creative rut, and why heroism is making a comeback in the popular culture.

Re: Saving Star Wars
Was the podcast recorded before or after Lucasfilm confirmed that Lawrence Kasdan will be writing at least one of the new scripts?

Re: Saving Star Wars
There are 3 hard and fast rules for making good Star Wars Movies.
1.) Timothy Zahn
2.) Get away from the main characters and explore the universe.
3.) The Yuzhon Vong never happened.
Lawrance Kasdan's involvement is great, it's too bad that Irvin Kirtchner is dead.

Ummmmm...... What's up with the picture of Harrison Ford? It just doesn't look right. I don't want to point out what looks wrong about it but if you look hard enough it's pretty obvious.

I'd love to see Nicholas Meyer direct one of 'em.

If you haven't seen it I recommend the Red Letter Media review of the prequels.
Unless you offend easily.

Re: Saving Star Wars
Anyone who thinks that Disney and Star Wars is a mad match has never seen the Jedi Academy attraction at Disneyland. There is more joy and homage to the Original Films in that short interactive experience than Lucas ever managed to muster.
Some things can continue very well under new management. Marvel IP is doing remarkably well under Disney, both narratively and financially.

Re: Saving Star Wars
Thanks for the podcast. It was nice to hear that J. Last had the same thought about the Avengers that I had.
