Re: Satellite Photos: Before and After the Tsunami
I went to High School in Japan (64-66) and returned 30 years later to run a company there. The Japanese people are magnificent. You won't see a lot of pictures of wailing and brow beating. You will see (assuming fair reporting) scenes of people helping each other out without complaint, 0 crime, unbelievably minimalized disruption. My heart goes out to them for their loss. My spirit grows with their example to us all.
Donations to relief here have the certainty of efficient use/implementation.

Re: Satellite Photos: Before and After the Tsunami
Someone at NYT should be commended. What an excellent use of graphics to illustrate the devastation.

A sentence one will not see often at Ricochet. In this case, though, I agree.

Re: Satellite Photos: Before and After the Tsunami
These photos are shocking and I agree with the prior sentiments about commending the NYT. They are all the more shocking because a young (early 30s) man I've known since he was 5 and his pregnant wife (and her family) live in Sendai. We heard from him on Thursday night after the earthquake that they were okay, as was her mother. He included a photo of his apartment, which appeared to be structurally intact, but well scrambled. We've heard nothing further from him and do not know the status of the rest of the family. I'm also not sure whether he wrote before or after the tsunami and I've been afraid to ask his frantic (stateside--he's American) mother, since I've been trying to be the upbeat, encouraging one. Keep them all in your prayers. The statistics become meaningful when you know some of them.

Man's power to destroy is great, but these photos clearly show that nature's power is greater. Incredible and tragically sad.

That's horrible. I keep wonder what it's like where my brother is.
Re: Satellite Photos: Before and After the Tsunami
I'm glad to hear from you, outstripp. I was worried about you when the news of the quake & tsunami was first reported.

Re: Satellite Photos: Before and After the Tsunami
In case anyone wondered, we heard from my friend very briefly late last evening. They are fine, but their apartment probably does have structural damage. They are staying with her parents--her family is safe--who live on high ground above Sendai, so there's no tsunami damage. He said that communication is difficult, so contact will be intermittent; we're just happy he's safe.
