As reported by the Huffington Post, Sarah Palin was on the O'Reilly Factor last night talking about the oil spill.  Sarah's takeaway:

[Obama's] top priority is cap-and-tax.  It is using this crisis, not letting it go to waste, but [using] this crisis to increase the cost of energy. And that is going to stall any kind of economic recovery that we have.

Some might call this borderline conspiracy theory, but it strikes me as a rather sensible conclusion.

Well, it was the President's Chief of Staff who opined, "You never want a serious crisis to go to waste."

I truly don't see how this disaster justifies cap and tax (unless cap and tax bans or severely limits oil drilling so as to reduce spills, how does taxing energy production and consumption eliminate oil when green tech is still in the natal or pre-natal phase?). However, I would not put it past the White House to try to use this crisis to gin up support for such an unpopular proposal.

Of course, if you really do think that we have an energy crisis, then Obama's move makes perfect sense. There are plenty of liberals and progressives who have been frustratedly pining for Obama to turn to cap/energy/etc since long before the spill. So on the one hand, he's been facing growing political pressure to gin up support period. That pressure's intensified greatly post-spill -- both from the enviroleft and from opinion leaders on the generic left, who want him to Show Leadership by going big. For Obama to disappoint them completely would really be a shocker. He can't afford a huge group of foes on the right, a huge swatch of disgruntled independents, a disgusted liberal base, and a jaded liberal commentariat. An unenviable position to be in!

Prediction: the simple act of drilling for oil and gas (v. burning what you find) will soon be "proven" to be a big cause of CO2 emissions, and thus climate change.

The cap n tax/GOM connection is not logical, but psychological: scare people so that they put up less resistance to depraved stupidity and ilogic.

I saw the segment of O'Reilly, originally, and, thanks to Freidersdorf, a second time on You Tube. I am not a mind reader ( here's a chance for some to say, "there's nothing there to read"), but I got the feeling she was being careful not to shout conspiracy, while at the same time dropping several hints and out right statements the Obama administration's refusal of assistance from the Dutch, and others who have specialized equipment and skills, to be helpful. I believe that it is true that a number of offers were turned down. Also, there is this wierd Jones Act ( aha! another Englishman no doubt) that Obama's administration seems to be just unable to overcome. In an earlier post by Peter Robinson, numerous extra or outright un- constitutional acts by Obama were discussed. This Jones Act, well it's just a bridge too far. No president would dare override this bedrock of American law. We could be talking outright rebellion on this one.

Personally on day one of the blowout, after feeling for the dead and their families,I cringed at the possible consequences. Knowing how anti fossil fuel Obama and his crew are, I thought, "Oh no, this will definitely

be used as another point in the cap and tax politics. I never believed he ever intended to actually make more drilling available when he signed an act several months ago in this area. Obama wants to make energy much more expensive for US citizens. Of course the problem is, not being ruler of the World yet, he can't control other country's uses of fossil energy. Therefore, the natural outcome will be to make America poorer and non-competitve. And here comes the conspriracy...

I DON'T THINK HE CARES. As a matter of fact, I think that is what he wants to do.

Did anyone else wonder early on, "what the heck are we doing to contain the oil?". I realized BP had to be the one to stop the gusher, but the Federal Government was the only entity capable of containing, skimming, dispersing, soaking up or whatever, the released oil. Day after day goes by, what were they doing? It seemed like absolutely nothing. Am I wrong? Were we working 24/7 and I just wasn't aware? Can someone please enlighten me.

Of course he doesn't care, that's why he's strolling on beaches snacking on snow cones and unleaded deep fried shrimp. The spill:

1. Gives him a lot of allies in his battle against oil companies and business in general by playing off hot emotions.

2. Advances his Cap and Tax agenda as well as huge government handouts for "green energy."

3. Makes people call for more big government to "fix the problem."

Politically, the spill hurts B.O. as a Katrina type event - but in a round-a-bout way, it helps his main goals of growing government and shrinking private business. He can say, "see how bad big oil is?" or "see how much we need green energies?" or "see how much we need big government to prevent such problems when companies run wild?"

That's why he looks so calm, in my opinion.
