Wow.....I really thought she was just planning to be a mover and a shaker, fearlessly bringing issues to the table.  Maintaining the freedom to come and go as she pleased, jumping in when an issue captivated her.  A political gadfly.

But this sure as heck looks like a campaign ad!

As a Minnesotan, I'd say that she's the only candidate with no accent. (Note: for some strange reason, after WWII, a lot of Scandinavian Minnesotans headed off for Wasilla, AK, to find fame and fortune. They didn't find it, but they brought their Minnesota accent to Alaska, and now, because of Sarah, their accent is famous.)

What happened to Kenneth? - is he OK?

Much nicer bus than Mr Obama's - is that an American flag I see on the front?

I surely hope she doesn't run!  The current lacklustre assembly of candidates surely has to spur either Christie or Ryan into the race.  If Palin declares, they will back off, and we'll have eight years of you-know-who

If they're genuine, they don't bother me. For example, Perry's accent seems genuine. Even GW Bush's seemed genuine to me, even though he was the son of a New Englander. Obviously Texas had the bigger impact on GW.

I'm a Jersey girl and my accent is exactly like Chris Christie's.  I drink cawfee.  I have no business criticizing any candidates' accents.  I'll just stick to criticizing what they say.

Actually, Palin's family is from Idaho, that is where she was born,  and that is where she returned to, for college.

Meanwhile, I think she is going to run, but am not sure why she would.  However, I am absolutely a supporter, so that would be fine with me.

I really don't care about the nonsense regarding turning off some groups of voters.  I am not a "group think" person that needs to drag critical "independents along with me, when I decide what I like.  I don't like most people's decisions in grocery store aisles (in my way) or on roadways (in my way).  Most people can't spell.  Most people can't solve basic math problems.  Most people can't make basic car repairs.  We are now at the point where most adults pay no federal income taxes.

People that can't spell, do math, or fix a fan belt aren't gonna vote for Romney or Ryan, anyway, so why not back somebody with genuine appeal that might, somehow, appeal to people that can't solve for X if 2X + 4 = 10?  Let her appeal to the voters. That would be her job.

I think she will announce a decision on Sept. 3.  I think if Perry looks unassailable by then, if he looks like he is accelerating toward the nomination, she may decide not to run.  If Perry stumbles or looks like he's not catching fire, that leaves her an opening and she will take it.

As for whether her running affects the entry of Christie or Ryan, it should not: those two occupy different spaces in the campaign and have different arguments in their favor, so if they feel called to run, Palin should be no barrier to entry.

This is probably the most cynical post I've seen in a while.

I also don't follow your logic ---- I don't for a minute think that stupid people will be attracted to Palin.  Her message, and her life's story, is all about self-reliance and hard work.  We already saw who the stupid people voted for last time around.

Yes. I know. It's not where you were born. It's usually the peers you grow up with on the playground that determine your accent.

Why, Erik!  Are you saying that Palin is not lacklustre and would be the kind of formidable candidate that would scare off would-be competitors?

It's a strange calculus that figures a politician who can't beat Sarah Palin for the nomination can nevertheless beat Obama in the general election.

If she doesn't seek the top slot, this kind of ad campaign will be helpful in making her an attractive VP pick again -- de-toxifying the brand, so to speak.

Outsiders tend to quickly adopt the local accent if it is sharply different from the own and their native accent is relatively neutral. Drop someone from Ohio or Iowa into a small Mississippi town and they'll be y'allin'  in no time flat. Not so much vice versa. I've had ample opportunities to witness the phenomenon.

As for New Jersey accents, someone with a good ear can identify the region of NJ from the accent. Outsiders have difficulty with this. My wife, born and raised in the Newark area can do it. Interestingly, in rural north PA and upstate southern tier NY people take her to be from New York City. NJ never occurs to them.

I lived in NJ on and off for half my life. I don't hear the accent unless I'm in another part of the country. Only then do I recognize it.

I would have thought that Bachmann's strong showing so far would have precluded Palin from joining the race.   It seems to me that they both occupy the same political space.

It also seems to me that it would be hard for Palin and Bachmann to seriously attack each other, given that they've both made strong statements of support for each other.  Doesn't Palin joining the race send a signal that she doesn't think Bachmann is up for the task?

It is within the realm of possibility that she could be looking at creating a 3rd party?  Or perhaps a new political PAC or advocacy group to put pressure on politicians in this election cycle to stay on message?  She certainly seems to be gearing up for something...

StickerShock, I am distrustful of voters that feel the need to be won over, regardless of core principles.  We are always cautioned to gravitate towards the most moderate candidate, with the broadest possible appeal.

I am just fine with Palin's core principles and believe she can sell them to a broad audience; that's her job.

We already know that Werner at US, Rolling Stone, etc. and all of the pop-media outlets that focus on the Kardashian wedding will be lambasting her; they do now and will pull out all of the stops, if she runs.

I just don't care to be guided by political consultants that want to make us think all of those same outlets that appeal to American Idol voters will suddenly treat any other challenger to Obama as even a neutral option.

Every election we are instructed to try to find the candidate that will be so uninteresting as to keep the dummies home, on the couch.  That's cynical.
