Must... get... to... Ricochet... before Kenneth!

This item appeared in the food section of SF Weekly last Tuesday. Apparently San Francisco is at the vanguard within the U.S. in making vegan meals available to prisoners, thanks to arrested PETA protesters and a particularly accommodating Sheriff.

However we still lag the more civilized UK where apparently wool blankets and the similarly offensive down pillows can be replaced with plant-based products. So at least there remains an important goal to work toward.

Wait. Prisons have down pillows?

How about this: prisoners are required to eat vegan meals. No delicious animal products for them.

An initiative both greens and law-and-order types can get behind.

Of course, it fails if the vegan food is made more expensive to prepare than food with animal products in it -- which is likely what would happen.

Or in the case of the "vegans," give them a pair of gloves to pull their own damn supper from the prison yard.

Trace, I totally missed this one, because I don't read the food section.  I turn right to the guns and ammo pages.

You'd give 'em gloves? JC, I'm surprised you're such a softie.

No way a SF magazine has guns and ammo pages!

It's the mint on the pillow and the turn down service that really grates.

Mint on the pillow? Probably the pillow from Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Like the grates/prison reference though! (Formatting's gone to heck again.)

My first reaction?  "San Francisco hasn't jailed more than 2 vegans?"

That's what you get for being a “sanctuary city” for “undocumented aliens”.

Vegan meals are required for prisoners from Vega.

Heck, I'd just deport 'em, but it would take centuries and trillions of dollars with conventional spacecraft….

Here in Arizona, Sheriff Joe serves bologna sandwiches.  Neither green nor palatible.

Isn't there a play that deals with these issues?  The Vegana Monologues or something?

Not even a little green?

I initially misread the headline and thought that vegans were being targeted for jail time. The moment when I realized the error may have been the most disappointing of my life.

Many US prisons use "Management Loaf" as a disciplinary measure: three meals a day of it.

Special Management Meal
Yield - Three Loaves

• 6 slices whole wheat bread, finely chopped
• 4 ounces imitation cheddar cheese, finely grated
• 4 ounces raw carrots, finely grated
• 12 ounces spinach, canned, drained
• 2 cups dried Great Northern Beans, soaked,
cooked and drained
• 4 tablespoons vegetable oil
• 6 ounces potato flakes, dehydrated
• 6 ounces tomato paste
• 8 ounces powdered skim milk
• 4 ounces raisins

A few minor adjustments to replace the dairy with soy or almond substitutes and this becomes an appropriate vegan diet.

Wow. Fascinating. Why even bother replacing dairy-based fake cheese with vegan fake cheese? Cheese is flavor -- eliminate it for maximum punitive effect.

Almonds and almond products are too expensive for prison use, I think. As for soy milk, maybe you need something milky as a binder. If not, mightn't it be cheaper to just include some soy beans instead? Or maybe peanut butter could work as a binder -- I think peanuts plus wheat make a complete protein.

PS: Here's an interesting article (by a vegetarian) claiming there's a prison experiment in California that shows that inmates fed a near-vegan diet are much more docile.

Kenneth, I'm always looking for the guns and ammo pages in SF Weekly; I can never find them. Lots of tips on hunting, sure, but not the kind of hunting that interests me and never anything on guns & ammo. Help me out.

When California releases the anticipated 30,000 convicts soon, their's going to be a run on tofu, that's for sure.

"Management Loaf" doesn't sound that bad at all. I think I'll give it a try.

I agree with Kervinlee--substitute real cheese, fresh spinach, real milk, and lose the raisins, and you might have a tasty casserole for a chilly fall evening.
