The more I think about it, the more I think that the White House's talk about the Supreme Court being a big obstacle to the Obama agenda is just a political ploy. Obama needs a scapegoat, because his party controls the White House and Congress by large majorities. He won the election by the largest margin for a Democrat since 1964. Aside from the unique circumstances of LBJ's election, Obama was the first Democratic candidate to win more than 51 percent of the popular vote since FDR in 1944.

Republicans are putting up a valiant fight against statism and centralization, but they don't have the votes. Obama has no one to blame for the failure of his package except reality. So he and his advisers have decided to pick on the Supreme Court.  Better yet, the Justices cannot fight back. Remember that the President chose to attack the Justices in person during his State of the Union address, when they couldn't react -- though I would have applauded if one of them had walked out.

Makes sense to me - after all, the "as you know, George W. Bush left X a complete wreck" horse was pummeled into dust months ago. I can't help but wonder how much Obama's recent behavior has influenced Justice Kennedy to stick around for a few years. Maybe we should thank the president for showing his hand so plainly!
