Even if you have already seen Senator Marco Rubio's speech to the Republican National Convention last night, it is worth watching over and over.

Tight for time?  Scroll through the video and listen to 30 seconds at random and you will be transported to a better place (the headline quote appears at 6:10).

We just witnessed the national debut of conservatism's next Great Communicator.

My wife was disappointed that Rubio wasn't Mitt's VP pick, but this is the embarrassment of a deep bench of talent.  Several commenters (on both sides) said that this speech indicates that at some point Rubio will be president.

I watched one of Rubio's first floor speeches on You Tube soon after he was sworn in.  He was eloquent, knowledgeable and articulate...without notes and without a teleprompter.  I've loved him since.

I can't disagree, except for one small quibble.  We saw the emergence of conservatism's two great communicators:  Rubio and Ryan.

Think of that ticket sometime down the road.

Rubio gets America in a way many Americans do not. That's why he can come up with lines like "these are the ideas that people come to America to get away from." If you came from somewhere else, you know why you're here. All immigrants should resonate with this message. Why so many Latinos vote for the Democrats is incomprehensible to me. Somehow, Rubio and others have to get this message out.

Marco Rubio knows why he's here:

En este país, ustedes van a poder lograr todas las cosas que nosotros no pudimos.

As an Italian immigrant whose family came to the USA with nothing, Rubio's speech was the most profound one for me.  Talking about his grandfather on the porch and his mom and dad working late all were  deeply personal reflections of my own life experiences.  His line about his father standing behind a bar so he could someday stand behind a podium almost brought me to tears and filled me with the urge to call my father to thank him for all he sacrificed for me and my siblings.

The most amazing thing about the Rubio and ctruppi stories though are how completely unextraordinary they are in the history of this great country.  We need leaders like him to constantly remind everyone that this idea of "huddled masses" coming to our shores and forging new, successful lives filled with opportunity for their children regardless of background, religion or education is unique in the history of mankind.  The world needs us to preserve this precious gift - Reagan's "shining city on the hill" for if it is lost, I fear a new dark age will dawn!

I suppose it shouldn't be too surprising that Padron cigars garnered applause at a Republican convention (starting at 2:30). Republicans know a good cigar, evidently. Perhaps this is why Nanny Bloomberg considers himself an Independent.

I thought there were a lot of terrific lines over the three days, but the line that headlines this post is the most devastatingly effective. It reminds people of Obama's Euro-socialism without calling him a Euro-socialist. Just brilliant.

Listening to it again, and I'm simply awestruck. Have the dems attacked this one yet, or is it too pure to give them an opportunity?

Ryan does not begin to compare with Rubio. Rubio spoke clearly - every line was actually connected to his feelings. Ryan has great words, at best OK oratory. Some highlights where he sorta FELT what he was saying, but mostly, delivering lines (like Santorum and jokes). Rubio speaks FROM the heart TO the head. He is the future.

I think Ryan is as good, and that's a high standard.

We can argue about that, but there's an even more important point.  Isn't it great that we have two young, vibrant conservatives about whom we can have this argument?  It's been a long, long time.

Ryan-Rubio or Rubio-Ryan.  Either works for me.

I've posted on this before, but it is worth re-emphasizing here. Marco Rubio is not only an impassioned and dedicated conservative. He may be the greatest orator in our party in a generation, and as an old school conservative who appreciates that, in a rightly ordered polity, what we say and how we act ought to be in accord, I respect that greatly.

Take just one small contrast. Rewatch Rubio's speech, and then rewatch Romney's. There are points in time in both speeches when the audience erupts in applause. Mitt tries to get them corralled back in, he starts speaking, sometimes speaking over them, and they keep going on.

When Rubio begins speaking again, however passionately they  were cheering, they fall silent.

And the silence is unlike that which comes from intimidation or force; it is unlike the anticipatory heart-in-throat silence of "oh, God, what idiotic thing is he going to say next!?". It is not the silence of despair.

Instead, it is the silence that accompanies reverence.

They fall silent for Marco Rubio because they want to hear what he's got to say. They listen.

Yes, I noticed that too.  During the live chat, someone--I think it was Rob Long--mentioned that instead of applause lines, Rubio was delivering applause paragraphs.

My dad (a published historian whose name I shall withhold for privacy reasons) said the same thing the very first time he saw Rubio on TV. "That man is going to be President some day."

My dad's a bit of a squish, but pretty reliably right-of-center, and he's impressed by Rubio.
