Royal Wedding Open Thread
Any time my daughters attempt to dress up as princesses, my husband gives them a lecture on Constitutional Republics, George Washington and the evils of monarchies. I'm only slightly kidding. But I just caught a bit of the nuptials between Kate and William and it looked lovely.
Here's your chance to comment on the dress (it was beautiful, wasn't it?), the weirdness of that particular royal family, the music choices, or even to just make fun of people who were watching.
My own initial thoughts:
--Thank God Kate Middleton wore a modest dress. Let's hope this influences brides across the world and they stop baring all on their wedding day.
--Say what you will about the Church of England but the Archbishop's homily sounds like it was nicely focused on the vocation of Christian marriage. And the few hymns and songs I caught were beautiful.
--Thank God for George Washington and the United States of America!

Re: Royal Wedding Open Thread
It's being shown wall-to-wall on all the nets, so I'm watching. In this Godless, wicked, profane and decaying world, I find it heartening that an Anglican ceremony is garnering worldwide attention.
Sure, there's lots to criticize, but there's a lot to admire. Westminster Abbey, the celebration of holy union, the words of the clergy, the sacred music, the choirs...
Human beings everywhere need - and will always create - models of their aspirations. The religious beauty of this day is a huge "[expletive] you!" to the Satanic forces in the world.

Even better, their long-form marriage certificate has already been released.

Re: Royal Wedding Open Thread
I hope William's married life, seen from the outside, is as boring and dignified as his grandmother's is. At least that should be the public view of it.
Re: Royal Wedding Open Thread
Two thoughts (although I caught only about 5 minutes during kiddie breakfast):
1. Would've liked a Prince Harry Live Mic.
2. Watching the Queen Bee (she wore yellow, after all) stand there, stoically, while everyone sang God Save the Queen was .... bizarre.

Just checking so you can know that disinterest isn't a lack of awareness.

Do you mean she should have sung God Save the Queen to herself? That would have been bizarre'er, I think.

A fist pump would have been nice.

Ha ha. Agreed. Of course.
No, the bizarre-ness came from a whole country singing to one person. I feel as though in America, we salute/sing to/pledge to the flag & the idea of our country or perhaps the ideals of our country. In England, they sing to a person. A single human being! (I know, I know, times have changed over there.) But even as a tradition, it just seems so odd. So different from our tradition. In stark contrast, really. An interesting reminder of where we came from. That's all ...

To God. About one person. I suppose that's even worse.

Re: Royal Wedding Open Thread
I second the modest wedding dress proposal. I swear some of the brides these days (though it's been true at least since I was married nearly 20 years ago) are trying to show all the other men what they're about to be missing out on. The dresses these days are all either backless, frontless, topless, or skirtless. Do you have to be a princess to afford an entire dress??

God save the British people and freedom. The Queen can take care of herself.

Re: Royal Wedding Open Thread
English people won't like this, but Kate seems sort of American to me. I liked the whole spectacle, even though I usually hate ceremonies.
Re: Royal Wedding Open Thread
Kate's dress was flawless -- tasteful, graceful, modest yet incredibly flattering. And her sister Pippa's dress (Pippa was the maid of honor, the one holding the train) was spectacular.

Re: Royal Wedding Open Thread
I saw snippets of the ceremony, but didn't hear the music or choirs. I'm not a big follower of fashion but ------ gorgeous dress on a gorgeous young woman. Very sweet and poised, and the couple seemed humble and gracious. I saw the balcony kiss and was amazed at the crowd turnout. My daughter's college-aged friends in the UK could not give a hoot about any of this, so I was foolishly extrapolating their attitudes to represent a big swath of the population. Wrong! It's a big deal, apparently. Hope they all enjoy the party & a few pints.
The princes at least are not parasites. They serve in the military and support good causes. I guess my natural Irish-American-Catholic dislike of the British monarchy has settled down a bit. At least for the big wedding day. Ha ha!

Re: Royal Wedding Open Thread
Beautiful ceremony, and I am glad it went off without a hitch. No craziness by certain religious fanatics. As an Australian, and having Queen Elizabeth as Queen of Australia, it was fun to watch the ceremony together with Dame Edna Everage's commentary in the broadcast.
Does anyone know who represented the United States of America at the ceremony?

Perhaps Queen Elizabeth should have sung God Save The Queen in the first person instead?
Well HM Queen Elizabeth has reigned 4 years longer than Congressman John Dingell; and her father George VI lasted 6 years fewer than Congressman John Dingell Senior.
Who said their is no royal inheritance in the United States of America?

Why would They let Harry pick the nuptial date?
Re: Royal Wedding Open Thread
When my girls woke up today, the television was still showing royal wedding pageantry and I pointed out all the details (princess, prince, flower girls, horses, carriage, etc.). My 3-year-old replied, "Mommy, I want you to go back to work."
She then went back to playing rabbit and frog (some game of her invention) with her sister.
No danger of a princess complex here!

Here is Dlisted's Michael K on the gown:
"A million copies of this are being made by child slaves in Chinese sweat shops as we speak! But to appeal to today's modern woman, they will chop the sleeves off, plunge the neckline to the belly button, remove the underlay over the breasts, hike up the front and install a built-in-thong!"
