Are you excited?

From Politico's Morning Score:

The libertarian Texas congressman will formally join the 2012 fray today in Iowa, making an announcement at the Des Moines Holiday Inn Airport. "I'm going to start an exploratory committee," Paul said on Fox last night. "That might lead to the next decision." Paul's expected to unveil support from three members of the Iowa GOP's Central Committee at the event. http://bit.ly/ihuBoR

I tend to agree with many of Paul's stated positions, although he has obvious downsides, too. And I'm not just talking about his less-than-presidential presence. But how will this change the race, if at all? Do we have any super-excited Paul supporters in the Ricochet community?

Are you ready for some Ron Paul!

I think most of us agree with a good number of his positions, but the ones we disagree with are so odious that it ain't happening.  Just speakin for me.

Although I agree with a good number of his positions, I have to think he's not mentally stable. His principles aren't fixed in what we call reality. For example, he's come out in favor of the Ground Zero Mosque. Why would he bring that up now? People like him have a self-destructive streak that masks itself as principled fearlessness and integrity, rather like Jimmy Carter.

I'd vote for him before Romney, I think.

Usually I just vote for the candidate that can give me the most money for no work in exchange - or "free" health care.  But, for RP, I'll make an exception.

No, I'm not excited.  My first response when I heard the news last night was, "please go away."

I'm as excited about Ron Paul as about Harold Stassen.

Hey all you "statist" Ricocheters:

Ron Paul's presence has nothing to do with his becoming President nor with ruining the Grand Old Party. It has everything to do with insuring that important things now on some politician's tables get put and stay on all political tables during the interminable run-up to the election. Whether you agree or disagree with Paul's positions, there is not one of them that has been formed "finger in the wind";not one unworthy of discussion. His positions are something solid for the "real candidates" to grapple with. Renaldo Magnus is dead, and there is no Duke of Kent waiting in the wings to "soldier" us through the spot of trouble that is the USA in the coming decade. Paul is an important part of the times that are making the man who can lead us out of a lost Century of Progressivism.

It's not uneality in which his principles are fixed, it is an almost rabid, near-isolationist foreign policy, which overrides, among other things, his ability to discern the true motivation of certain Muslims to want to build a mosque near Ground Zero.

He is one-hundred percent correct on his economics.  But I cringe when I hear him blaming America for terrorism because we are "occupiers."

While he might have stated it more artfully, I don't think there is any doubt that many Islamic terrorists are, in fact, animated by U.S. military presence on Muslim soil.  Look how many "foreign fighters" swarmed into Iraq and Afghanistan.

And Osama bin Laden's original declaration of war upon America was predicated by his anger at the U.S. military "occupation" of Saudi Arabia.

To some extent, it's a chicken and egg problem.  It also depends a lot on how one defines "occupier."  Ron Paul actually did state it that unartfully, almost word for word how I did in fact:

Rep. Paul's money quote is about 6:50 in.
