The numbers should close toward the end since the panhandle precincts are more conservative.

SpatialD: BTW... Everyone in the media is reporting that this is a winner take all primary, yet from doing some research, just 5 days ago, there was talk that in addition to losing half of their delegates due to the rules violation, the delegates awarded would be proportional as well. Can anyone definitively tell me if thisnis true? If so, why is it that no one can seem to get it straight. · 3 minutes ago

It is currently a winner takes all state. Newt (or Santorum) could have a proxy challenge this with the RNC to try to get them to change it. If the race is close for a long time, expect this to be a real issue. If the race is not, not.

FYI, this will be -- by far -- the largest vote total Newt has received on a single election night.

Let not your hearts be troubled.  Obama lost tonight. Lemme splain:
Newt's appeal was that he was a "fighter".  Then when he actually got a fight from someone besides a debate moderator, couldn't handle it.  Complained about big money ads and "lies".  Ummm, OK, you couldn't handle Obama.

Mitt, who has the reputation of being soft, is actually a bare-knuckle street brawler when pressed.  Don't get in his way; he'll flatten you.  And won't turn a hair nor lose sleep.  This is how he'll deal with Obama.
Mitt was my 4th choice (Pawlenty, Cain & Perry).  When he gets into the White House, we'll have all kinds of issues with him.  But don't make the mistake of thinking he won't get in because he's too polite.  Man's a shark.

This would be more true if the remaining votes were in the panhandle. They're mostly in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties. The only panhandle counties with many votes left are Okalossa and Escambia counties. Romney leads in both counties, but by a lower amount than in the state in general. I'd guess that we'll not see much change from now. Could be wrong.

I guess we'll see.

My big fear is that he's a shark when facing fellow Republicans, but will turn into a guppy when facing the Democrats.

McCain was like that, and I get a similar vibe from Mittens as well.

For all our sakes, I genuinely hope that I'm wrong about him.

I'm not gonna hold my breath though, either.

I was hoping for a Gingrich victory so I could see Jennifer Rubin's reaction.

Amen.  I have been troubled by conservatives who have complained about Romney's tactics, starting with Gingrich himself.  For years, conservatives--especially Rush Limbaugh--have lamented that Republican leaders won't take the fight to Democrats and fight fire with fire.  Romney now appears to be such a fighter, and many conservatives are aghast.  I want our candidate to have a smile on his face while his campaign stabs the opposition in the back.  Let's hope Romney keeps it up when he is facing Obama in the fall.

Newt gave a great speech. Despite the Romney victory, Rubin, Podheretz, et al, lighting up twitter with vitriol you would expect from the left.

So now Romney has 69 out of the 1144 delegates needed for the nomination. There's still a long way to go.

Unlike you, I want a candidate who can make a positive case for conservative principles. That's the kind of fighter I want--not a backstabbing snake.

This idea that this dishonest creepiness is what conservatives have meant when we said we wanted someone who would fight--this is just insane.  It shows how utterly out of touch Romney and his supporters are with conservatism, that they would think that this ugly behavior answers some need in real conservatives.

Thanks to the magic of DVR, I'm about 30minutes behind. Just watching Newt's very good speech. But he needs to smile more. Too much bulldog face even when delivering laugh lines.

Romney's running an outstanding race.  He is using his advantage in money and organization to defeat his opponents.  Can't wait to watch him use these advantages in the general...oh wait  Just a little gallows humor.  Looking at the map it looks like Newt won Alabama and Ga.  Mitt won N.j., N.Y.  and maybe Ill.  On the plus side Mitt appears to have done well on I-4.  This is encouraging since we will be trotting him out in the general.  Finally,  at the risk of upsetting a great many people, a note to Mitch, Chris, Paul and Jeb.  I let people shoot at me because I felt this country was worth it.  And you can't run for president?  Really?  They give you a really cool plane.  And a helo too.

Mitt Romney gave a good victory speech - but I kept wondering what he would specifically do ("America needs X, and I'll do it!").

Gingrich, by contrast, specifically said he'd ask Congress to remain in session and repeal ObamaCare, and Dodd-Frank, and Sarbanes-Oxley, and have those repeal bills on his desk for right after his swearing-in so that he can sign them and issue a host of Executive Orders in the couple of hours  between the swearing-in and the Inaugural Balls.

I liked Gingrich's speech better.

You are right that there is a long way to go but that figure you cite is grossly misleading.

Newt has been trounced, trounced, three out of four times.

His campaign was an uncoordinated mess from day one. Now?

Try getting a loan for a business that's losing money and volume.

Newt is nearly done. It will be extremely difficult for him to raise money and build an organization, to say the least.

Perhaps Santorum will surprise, but he is a massive underdog.

DrewInWisconsin: Hmmm. More than half voted against Romney. (Yeah, c'mon . . . allow me to find a little silver lining.) · 19 minutes ago

With the anticipated exciting race of the night (Santorum/ Paul) having resulted in an overwhelming victory for the clearly not third party candidate, I agree that this is the most exciting part of the contest for the remainder of the night.

Will Romney beat Santorum + Newt? 24% of the vote still to be counted. · 1 hour ago

It's almost a dead-on tie.
