He's made a choice, and the choice is -- for my money -- the most principled politician in America.  Paul Ryan, the quietly insistent congressman from Wisconsin, is Mitt Romney's running mate.

So now we'll find out for sure: is America ready for a genuine and adult debate about our future and our economy?  Is America ready to think hard about the entitlement monster that threatens to gobble us up?

The Obama machine will be All Mediscare 24/7.  They'll paint Ryan and Romney as heartless, greedy, corrupt, and draconian.  If the left wing media thinks Romney is a murderer, imagine what they'll call Paul Ryan!

But say this for Romney:  this is a substantial choice.  It means something.  It's serious.  Suddenly, the Romney campaign is about something -- something important.

It may be a bad political choice.  Ryan's budget may be radioactive to voters.   But it's a courageous choice, and more than that, it's right.

Either we fix the budget mess or we're done.

If this pick loses the GOP the election because the people in God's waiting room can't be bothered to comprehend that the US is fiscally doing a high dive into an empty pool too fargin' bad.

At least the election will mean something. No one will be able to claim that they weren't warned of the grim consequences that would follow from fiscal collapse- and when that happens they won't be able claim they weren't offered a different path.

Vote wisely voters- for once.

It won't matter that they don't have a plan.  All that will matter is that Romney/Ryan want to reform entitlements on the backs young/poor people, and to top it off Romney wants to cut upper-income taxes too boot (as he promised in Michigan).

But Obama does have a plan for entitlement reform.  What's more, he already signed it into law.  It's called IPAB.  Obama's plan is to have an unelected, unaccountable board cut Medicare payments and services beginning in 2014.

It's a very simple, stark choice for the voters: under the Ryan plan, current seniors see no changes, while younger folks will get a choice of plans that uses market forces to drive down costs.  Under the Obama plan, current and future retires will see their benefits cut at the whim of IPAB.

That's the choice Romney-Ryan '12 needs to lay before the voters.

We're going to win; we're going to win with a mandate to change course away from a fiscal cliff; we're going to win as the party of grown-ups.

Romney certainly wasn't my first choice, but he's bringing me around.

But to be superficial and with female swing voters in mind: Romney/Ryan 2012: Too Good Looking?

Yes!! This is the first time I've be unequivocally excited about any development in this whole campaign season!

I wholeheartedly agree that this is a sign that we have a Republican ticket  prepared to actually fight on principle!! I don't see how else to spin this. The only reason to pick Ryan is to establish a serious ticket based on guts, principle and experience. If Romney simply wanted a "token conservative" to placate tea party voters there were much safer options. Instead of pandering to race, sex, demographics, electoral math, etc. our nominee chose a serious partner for serious times.

Right now my respect for Mitt Romney is through the roof.

Democrats will spew to the same nonsense and lies regardless. This time, however, the usual deep analysis of "Stupid!," "Evil!" and/or "Old!" don't exactly apply and Paul Ryan isn't "Rich!"

I guess they'll be left with the aquinian observation of "White!"

BTW, now that we've managed to install a genuine Ricocheti on the national ticket I propose our first demand should be that Congressman Ryan insist that Professor Rahe be appointed as the new Romney/Ryan campaign chair.*

*I would say health permitting, but I doubt a little thing like health could hold back The Professor.

Oh, and while we're at it:

Attorney General Epstein (Dr. Yoo's a bit younger, so we'll save him for  for SCOTUS), Press Secretary Lileks, Chief of Staff Robinson...

Only in the fantasy world that is DC politics could the Ryan Plan be seen as extreme. It is the least tinkering around the edges possible to avert catastrophe for a short period. This point should be made.

If the President wins re-election, the lesson the GOP establishment will take is that courage is dangerous, and hewing closely to the beltway conventional/liberal position is the way to power. The lesson they should take is that the LickSpittle Media must be destroyed - preferably by ignoring them.

Writing from Europe on my phone. I could not be more excited by this pick. Paul Ryan is a deeply philosophical conservative. He is well aware of the increasing alliance between big government and big business at the expense if liberty and opportunity. And the congressman knows how to communicate. If this plays out the way it might, we could enjoy a Romney turnaround followed by a Ryan restoration of constitutional small(er) government.

If you're looking for a productive way to channel your energies that would really make a difference, you'll probably have a pretty good time with campaign calls this weekend, and you'll have a chance to form a lot of people's first impressions of Ryan.

Takes five minutes to set up the first time, no time at all after that. It's easier, more secure, more fun, and more useful than in any previous national campaign. A genuinely superior experience from previous years.

Rob, aren't you one always telling us we've got to win, that everything bad with America happened because the GOP nominated Goldwater and lost to LBJ?  Well, let's hope Ryan is a plus, not a minus.

Still, I don't think attempts to paint Ryan as anti-middle class will work.  For some reason, American voters are incredibly sensitive to that tipping point when the rich, the poor, and the older generation of the middle class gang up against younger generations of middle-class workers (as has happened so spectacularly in Europe).  Obama is the lynchpin of this dynamic, while Paul Ryan is the main intellectual force against it, and perhaps voters will see that.

Seriously? We think Paul Ryan is going to chase away Florida? We are all speaking of the same state that elected Marco Rubio and Rick Scott two years ago, right? Just checking to be sure we're all on the same page here. All I know is Mitt Romney picked one of the best we have. If others would rather Mitt score runs by bunting himself around the bases, knock yourselves out.

This is a great choice, and a great team. I'm still in shock that the guy I wanted, the nice smart guy who pranked Romney with that empty ballroom in the spring in the guy! This is going to be an awesome win in November. 41 state landslide will send Obama to the UN, where he belongs.

Biden is busily scheduling lots of important stuff on the same days as the VP debate. Anything will do, squirtgun fights , union hall rallies , Home Depot listening tours , train rides ....but I cant imagine him showing up for a debate with Ryan. This is good news, I can hear Carville groaning .

Ryan seems to me to be a person of immense and unimpeachable character coupled with a tremendous intellect- by far the most impressive of the four across the tickets.Credit to Romney for choosing a running-mate who is likely to outshine him.I hope it works!

Finally!

A reason to vote for Romney.

Until now, my firm resolve was not to vote for Romney. I was going to sit this one out because, as bad a Obama is and would be, I thought a Romney presidency would be a disastrous failure and would serve only to further tarnish conservatism.

But now I'm converted. I'm on board. I'm actually excited.

So, Yes! I will be voting for Romney/Ryan.

Now, would someone please tell James of England he can quit stalking me to immediately rebut every naughty little thing I've ever said about his guy? Nevermind. I'll tell him myself: James of England, you can quit stalking me.
