CHICAGO—With campaign rhetoric becoming increasingly heated and both presidential nominees releasing more attack ads, a new 30-second spot from the Obama campaign this week accuses his opponent Mitt Romney of committing the 1996 murder of 6-year-old beauty pageant queen JonBenét Ramsey.

“I think this is a fair ad, and I think Mitt Romney owes an explanation to the American people as to why he murdered JonBenét Ramsey,” said Obama campaign manager Jim Messina, who called the commercial’s black-and-white reenactment of Mitt Romney carrying a kicking and screaming child to her death “accurate.” “Ultimately, voters need to know who they’re getting with Mitt Romney: a job- and child-killing businessman who is so deceitful he won’t release his tax returns or admit to a senseless murder that shook the nation to its core.”

(Oh, I did mention that this comes from The Onion, didn't I?)

Lack of a sense of humor is also a lefty trait, despite all the so-called comedians that are lefties. Most lefties wouldn't know a joke if it bit them on the... [considering what word wouldn't violate CoC]... nose.

They're too busy Saving The World, you see, to have a sense of humor, and they have to maintain their Perpetual Outrage And Offense at everything so that they can Feel The Pain of all the Approved Victim Groups.

This may have been great satire, but it was tasteless

I apologize for the intemperance of my tone in the previous posts.  I think, had I taken a moment to collect myself before posting, I would have sanded some of the edges.

That said, my critique addresses a psychological matter that is inescapably ad hominem,  at that term's root meaning.  That makes it necessarily accusatory.  Still, I could have done more to engender bonhomie than ad hominem.

Additionally, a pet peeve of mine is the humorless sort who look for an opportunity to [CoC redaction] in the Cheerios of anyone enjoying a joke.  "How can you be laughing today!  Don't you know it's the 50th anniversary of Nelson Mandela's imprisonment!?!"

My points stand, but I'm sorry for the sharpness of my presentation.

Humor, especially political humor, depends on the existence of shared assumptions.

If this image of the Obama campaign has become so commonplace that it can be the foundation of jokes, Axelrod needs to be very worried indeed.

As Queen would have said if they were still around (well, it seems that some of them still are, spotted at the Olympics):

"Is this the real life?
Is this just fantasy?
Caught in a landslide
No escape from reality
Open your eyes
Look up to the skies and see "

I see a Romney/Ryan landslide... but that may be a fantasy... I hope not.

til the last line.

The sad part was that until I read the last line, it didn't seem so far-fetched that it was a campaign ad run by the Democrats.

Right now, someone in the Obama campaign is reading the Onion article and saying, "Why didn't we think of that?"
