Right Out of Central Casting

Does China ever learn? I am a strong supporter of trade with China, having seen the good that it has done there. But the regime remains capable of great thuggishness. Apparently unsatisfied with the PR black eye they took over the handling of their imprisoned Nobel Prize winner, the Chinese have now beaten up a blind human rights lawyer in China who had fought the government's policy of forced abortions and celebrations. Here's CNN's latest clip about how authorities hassled reporters trying to visit Chen.
Also, here is a link to a story and video that started it all, when Chen spoke on camera about the treatment he has received.

Re: Right Out of Central Casting
I believe that the Chinese leadership is foursquare behind defending human rights. They just define anyone not in the Chinese Communist Party as sub-human, is all.

This is what the Chinese leadership believes about its own benevolent nature: aesop revised by archy
(archy the cockroach was a friend of the 1920s newspaperman Don Marquis and left him missives whenever Don left blank paper in his typewriter overnight, and an apple peeling or two in the trash can.)

This is what separates me from most conservatives, even most of the ricochetoise, I suspect: I would see much American treasure spent and blood spilled defending the rights and liberty of others, not just our own.
Re: Right Out of Central Casting
There is an amazing, underreported story about the emergence of lawyers like Chen in China, who push for human rights in the Chinese courts. As you can imagine, not always easy. But also not without victories.

Really?
Learn what?
In what instance, ever, in the past 100 years, has their behavior cost them anything they might value?
They own all of continental Asia, apart from South Korea. They own the Panama Canal. They own Iran. They own Venezuela. They own Cuba. They own most of the available land on the planet that has or may have Rare Earth Minerals, except for that which has been locked away from mining in the United States, locked away by lawsuits from leftist environmental groups that they support.
They are buying up the rights to oil production, all over the planet, with U.S. dollars, at the same time as they buy something like 30 to 40 percent of our Treasury Bonds.
They despise us and, more importantly, to them, they disrespect us. They have publically warned us (and humiliated us, though we don't realize it), by saying, "Do not dishonor your debt to us", when we did the QE 2 thing of basically priniting our money and buying our own debt with printed money. They despise us.
And they know we are weak and addicted to borrowed money.
To the Chinese, we have lost face.
