Continued from Part I:

JP: Has America learned any lessons from Mickey Kaus's groundbreaking blogger insurgency run?

LM: California as a political environment being rather different from many other states, it would be hard to take away any lesson with broad, nationwide applicability, honestly. But one thing I hope does come from his run is more bloggers who are passionate about politics and policy stepping up and running for public office, rather than restricting themselves to a commentary role in our political system. A lot of bloggers have deep policy knowledge, and goodness knows they care. That’s more than can be said of some politicians. I would advise, though, that if a blogger intends to run for public office other than at the most local level, they be sure they have a solid, diversified campaign structure in place from day one because generally, congressional and statewide races do not turn on earned media, which a blogger would be expected to be good at garnering alone.
