Ricochet Podcast #87: Looking For A Hero
This week, Jonah Goldberg sits in for the child-rearing Peter Robinson. We of course cover the presidential race, learn a few new words, discuss Ben-Hur's nationality, Jonah teaches us what a "girlfriend experience" is, and we paint a disturbing mental image of a certain northeastern governor. Trust us, it's very educational.
Listen in here:

- Cinncinatus was an aristocrat and political figure of the Roman Republic, serving as consul in 460 BC and Roman dictator in 458 BC and 439 BC. And yes, the city in Ohio was named after him. Update: Member Will Lord in the comments below disagrees.
- According to Ingolo.com, the correct pronunciation of Che is cheh.
- Gopher Stadium does look like amazing, although visiting an outdoor football stadium in Minnesota in December does take stones of steel. Note to Lileks: according to the website, the U2 concert has been rescheduled. Adjust your calendar. P.S. Lileks writes about his day at the game in much more detail on Lileks.com. We insist you visit there.
- Ben-Hur was laughingly described in the L.A. Times as a Palestinian here. Funny, he doesn't look Palestinian...
- The film James is referring to is indeed Footlight Parade. Here's the trailer.
- We're not going to go as far to say that this is the definitive source on this, but according to PalestineFacts.org, the origins of the name Palestine "derives from “Plesheth”, a name that appears frequently in the Bible and has come into English as “Philistine”. Plesheth, (root palash) was a general term meaning rolling or migratory. This referred to the Philistine’s invasion and conquest of the coast from the sea. The Philistines were not Arabs nor even Semites, they were most closely related to the Greeks originating from Asia Minor and Greek localities. They did not speak Arabic. They had no connection, ethnic, linguistic or historical with Arabia or Arabs." Have it out in the comments.
- It's Rosh Hashanah, so a hearty mazel tov to Ricochet member genferei for his winning post Why Can't We Call The New Deal A Wrong Turn? We'll be in touch, sir.
- Raymond Moley was not in fact FDR's Chief of Staff (the position didn't exist in those days) but was an important advisor and speech writer for the President. He later grew increasingly critical of his policies, eventually becoming a conservative Republican. Smart man.
- The logo for the National Recovery Administration.
- Here's the dance number from Footlight Parade when the dancers hold up cards of Roosevelt's face. Incredible.
- ABC News has the story about the 20,000 missing SAMs. Ruh-Roh.
- "Frenemy" in Arabic? Mr. Long, you have stumped us. Little help, Ricocheteers?
- And for the record, Mr Goldberg, Eskimos do not have 50 words for snow. And they don't rub their noses to kiss either.
- That said, be sure and subscribe to Jonah's great weekly email blast, The G-File (link at the very bottom of the page). We do.

The Foo Fighters?? Surely Laura Branigan was the proper choice here.

Cincinnati is named after the Society of the Cincinnati, an organization of Washington’s army. The society continues to exist in the form of a group of descendents of the officers in Washington’s army. The town flies the flag of the Society in a public square. The officers adopted the name because like Cincinnatus, Washington returned to his farm after the war.

Aww, give 'em a shot. There's a Hall 'n Oates (more Oates than Hall) look to 'em.
I think I just exceeded my McCain-Feingold annual apostrophe allotment.

Re: Ricochet Podcast #87: Looking For A Hero
Another fine podcast. Thank you.
Rob Long, Mark Steyn is my gold standard for the written word but by golly you can turn a phrase. If I can only have one paragraph, give me Mark Steyn. If I can only have one sentence, give me Rob Long. Your (I'm pretending to write to Mr. Long in this portion of the comment) delivery is very subtle as well. On an earlier podcast, Peter Robinson mentioned how he often didn't comprehend the significance of something you said until he listened to a podcast replay. You casually deliver complex concepts in a simple package. These ideas may go temporarily unnoticed because you often deliver a line with no warning and no feedback hook. The listener either hears it or is unaware it was spoken. I'd provide an example of one of these gems but I'm exhausted now and I must find some mouthwash.
Tongue bath of Rob aside; my mancrush writes the Bleat. Go there I must.

Thanks, Yeah! And I agree re: Rob. The fellow has a sly & disarming way of packaging his insight in the form of a question, which makes those of us who tend to blurt assertions look rather crude.
I'm still a bit miffed I got hammered for being technical on Pointilism, but, well, que seurat, seurat.

This was fun to listen to. Save for a few graphic details about corn and the digestive system.
Has anybody reading this comment ever actually been to Madison? Whenever I hear people talking about Wisconsin (as in the Badgers, not the state) I think about the two times I've been there.
It's like the Disneyworld for liberals. There was a Buddhist monk handing out pamphlets.(if that's what it's called. It was like a broadside, only about buddhism.) There was a Vietnam vet claiming to be the devil- or something along those lines.
I could go on and on, but if you want a full description, listen to Neil Young's "After the Gold Rush."

Firefly! Swoon. I knew there was a reason I loved Ricochet. The professor's quote is a great one, of course, but I think the best conservative quote actually comes from Serenity:
"Sure as I know anything, I know this: They will try again. Maybe on another world, maybe on this very ground swept clean. A year from now, ten? They'll swing back to the belief that they can make people...better. And I do not hold to that. So no more runnin'. I aim to misbehave."
Got that, Washington technocrats?

Re: Ricochet Podcast #87: Looking For A Hero
Thursday is the end of my week. After I listen to James, Rob and Peter there is nothing left.
That being said...I think Rob is wrong about Herman Cain's success in the FL straw poll. Florida republicans are very conservative; more conservative than say Texas republicans.
They were simply waiting for their turn. When it came, they cast their votes for Cain. That is why they moved the FL Republican primary up to January. FL republicans are fed up with compassionate this or liberal that. They are tired of having to wait their turn and finally get to choose from a poor field. Florida wants input. As the fourth largest electoral state they want to flex some muscle.

We Don't Need Another Hero!
Out of the ruins
Out from the wreckage
Can't make the same mistake this time
We are the children
the last generation
We are the ones they left behind
And I wonder when we are ever gonna change it
Living under the fear till nothing else remains
We don't need another hero
We don't need to know the way home
All we want is life beyond the Thunderdome
Looking for something we can rely on
There's got to be something better out there
Love and compassion, their day is coming
All else are castles built in the air
And I wonder when we are ever gonna change it
Living under the fear till nothing else remains
All the children say
We don't need another hero
We don't need to know the way home
All we want is life beyond the Thunderdome
What do we do with our lives
We leave only a mark
Will our story shine like a life
Or end in the dark
Give it all or nothing

I thought about this song, but honestly the video for it with Tina Turner decked out in full Mad Max wardrobe just kills it for me. Good idea, though.

The name Palestine refers to a region of the eastern Mediterranean coast from the sea to the Jordan valley and from the southern Negev desert to the Galilee lake region in the north. The word itself derives from “Plesheth”, a name that appears frequently in the Bible and has come into English as “Philistine”. Plesheth, (root palash) was a general term meaning rolling or migratory. This referred to the Philistine’s invasion and conquest of the coast from the sea.
