Rahe King

With Lileks not around to crack the whip, we go long (as in Rob) this week with a super-sized episode. First, Commentary Magazine editor-in-chief and New York Post columnist John Podhoretz stops by to talk about Obama-malaise, why we shouldn't worry too much about China, and gives insider's point-of-view on the News Corp scandal. Then, our homegrown presidential kingmaker Paul Rahe reassures us that a certain Congressman can run the country, the problem with Perry, and pitches Rob and Peter hard on a Ricochet cruise.

Thinking about your discussion, I wonder if it wouldn't be better for the GOP (while worse for the country) if the Supreme Court upholds Obamacare next June. If it is struck down, those in the political middle who fear what it will do to the economy won't have so strong a reason to vote for the GOP candidates at the Presidential and Congressional levels.

The best quote of the podcast, I thought, was Rob giving Professor Rahe advice on how to survive without Medicare: "Write another book, dude, write another book!"

Blue Yeti

That was almost the title.

Peter Robinson

Jimmy Carter: Peter, You referred to Texas as "..the fourth largest state."

Since the Mighty Blue Yeti is taking a break, could You please inform Me in what category that would be? · Aug 17 at 6:22pm

I was reaching back to the stuff I learned in junior high.  Texas is now the second largest state, by population (and, for what it's worth, by area).

If it makes you feel better, Rob (using what he will learn in the future) called Texas the largest state. John Podhoretz correctly called Texas the 2nd largest state. By the way, what was the 3rd largest state when you were in junior high?

No fair for Rob Long to reuse the word limn for comedic effect.  That was already a topic of a similar exchange on an Uncommon Knowledge with Andrew Ferguson (and, of course, hosted by Peter Robinson, who got the credit for using it sincerely). :-)

Peter, can you (or anyone, actually) recommend a good ANNOTATED version of Samuel Papys diary for a newbie? Embarrassed to say that I had not heard of him before the podcast. Wiki'd him and found some excerpts. The diary looks interesting but I would definitely need an annotated version. Thanks...paul

A great podcast, but Peter's pronunciation of "homage" surprised me. It's an english word, not a namby-pamby french one. Sound that "h" !, unless you want to be mistaken for an NPR poseur.
