Ricochet Podcast #80: We Love The 80's
It's number 80 so we booked a guest from the 80's: former MTV News anchor and current film critic for Reason.com, Kurt Loder. We talk to him about being at Rolling Stone during the glory days, MTV's impact (good and bad) on the culture, why 3D sucks, and the best and worst of the summer movies. His answer may surprise you. We also chat about Obama's birthday, and debate a fabulous Ricochet Podcast Post of The Week. So put on a thin tie, apply some gel to your hair and give it listen. On a Walkman? No problem, we've got you covered.
Music from this week's episode:
Hungry Like The Wolf by Duran Duran
Just Like Heaven by The Cure
Thanks to EJHill for the awesome graphic.
The Ricochet Podcast is proudly sponsored by Encounter Books and their Broadside series. This week's featured title is Why America Needs School Choice Jay P. Greene. Available in all formats at EncounterBooks.com and Amazon.com.

No, the appropriate response to the boys dressed up as Duran Duran should be "No Más, No Más!"

All I can hear in my head is
Everybody's working for the weekend
Everybody wants a little romance
Everybody's goin' off the deep end
Everybody needs a second chance, oh
You want a piece of my heart
You better start from start
You wanna be in the show
Come on baby lets go

Oh, how I loved the 80s! (Yes, yes, of course, the decade perfectly encapsulates all that is execrable in our culture, but...still. Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure! C'mon!)
However will I wait until tomorrow to listen to this podcast? Argh!

This picture is exceptionally disturbing. How do I get an 8x10? I'd also like it autographed. Putting the podcast in my pocket to listen to on the way to the Giants-Phillies game.

Can you imagine if they showed the full-length shot with skin-tight parachute pants?

Hey Rob, buster, how is Obama's possibly running with Hillary a "version" of your prediction that Hillary would oppose him in the primary? You're confusing "version" with "polar opposite".
Nice try, pal.

Like the first robin of spring... the swallows returning to Capistrano... a rodent being hoisted up by his rear end by the Punxsutawney Chamber of Commerce... so is Rob Long's prediction that Joe Biden is about to get his 3 am phone call...

EJ: your work remains hilarious (and well produced!).
James: your remark about China's subsidized comments sections made me laugh out loud in Peter Robinson-esque guffaws.
I’m also want to be on record in favor of the enima-with-flamethrower inducing, smirking but still thoroughly pro-capitalist, segues.

Re: Ricochet Podcast #80: We Love The 80's
First a wrist slap: a great podcast (which this has evolved into) requires and deserves engaged listening by the audience and talent ---Rob .
Why did MTV explode in early 80's? The production of music videos were funded by Artist marketing $ to sell vinyl albums. MTV procured its content, at no cost, for years. Free content -- a broadcasters dream.
James would make a fabulous host of a Cultural Podcast concept with guest or 2, addressing a "an announced culture subject of his choosing"

Re: Ricochet Podcast #80: We Love The 80's
Another pleasant Sunday afternoon get-together with my close friends, James, Rob & Peter. At least that's how I picture it in my mind while I listen and laugh along. Of course, since it's just a pleasant get-together, it's a little odd that James insists on pitching books to us all. But I just chalk that up to him being quirky.
