We're rushing this one out faster than usual because news has a shelf life of about 30 minutes right now. Andrew Klavan sits in for the vacationing Peter Robinson, and Byron York, The Washington Examiner's chief political correspondent brings us the very latest news on the deficit deal negotiations, straight from the front lines.

Support these links, or else:

  • Santa Barbara, CA is about 90 miles north of Los Angeles. It is pretty wonderful.
  • Ricochet's Dr. George Savage made the case last night that the threat of default was a myth.
  • Speaking of myths, here's a story from 2009 detailing the Obama administration's first budget proposal. Read it and weep.
  • Read Byron York's column for The Washington Examiner here. Follow him on Twitter here. We do.
  • Byron is correct. In 1996, the Democratic Party won a net of nine seats from the Republican Party, but the Republicans retained an overall majority in the House for the first time since the Great Depression. In the Senate, Republicans had a net gain of two seats in the Senate, following major Republican gains two years previously in the 1994 elections.
  • We couldn't find the photo the James mentions, but we did find this story on Star-Tribune.com about the avalanche of calls, emails. and faxes the state's representatives in D.C. have been receiving over the past few days.
  • Here's Charles Krauthammer discussing Obama's referencing of Reagan in his speech two nights ago. Krauthammer says "it's the moist cynical thing he's ever seen." That's saying something.
  • Time Magazine's cover from last February. Fair warning: brace yourself before clicking.
  • Ladies and gentlemen, direct from the Iowa State Fair: Pork Chop On-A-Stick
  • But wait, there's more: A statue of a cow made of butter!
  • Deep fried butter? Now, you've gone too far.
  • OK, maybe not: Princess Kay of The Milky Way.....in butter! If only butter had been around when Michaelangelo was doing his thing.
  • Whatever Chris Christie is doing in Iowa, he insists he's not there as a presidential candidate
  • Andrew Klavan's new book The Final Hour is available for pre-order now at Amazon.
  • The original version of The Killer Elite was directed by the great Sam Peckinpah and starred James Caan and Robert Duvall. The upcoming remake (it is indeed a remake) stars De Niro, Clive Owen, and Jason Statham. It could work.
  • Huzzahs to Ricochet member Grendel for walking away with a copy of this week's Encounter Pick of The Week for his post Maybe We Just Need to Hang Tough ‘Til 2016?. We'll be in touch, Mr. G.

I'm trying to remember if I said we were broadcasting from beautiful downtown Burbank.

What?!  Ya coulda given me advanced notice.  I'd have shown up with my 3 little boys to sit and watch while commanding them to hush up every 2 minutes.

Just a temporary image (was trying to evoke some sense of immediacy -- oh well). It's now replaced with a much more appropriate one of a cow made of butter.

As Rob scooted out to "peddle his shabby wares" we followed him to see just how shabby they are. Plus if you needed to know what Andrew looked like in the Peter Robinson hair as he recorded the podcast...

No more calls, we have a winner. If I could go back and re-name the episode, I would.

I am a Santa Barbara (Montecito) native. It is indeed beautiful and I've certainly been missing the climate lately. ...also missing all the great restaurants in SB. It would be nice to sit outside (without sweating or swatting mosquitos) and enjoy a breakfast at Cajun Kitchen, Xanadu's, or Jeanine's Bakery. *sigh* The DC/NOVA area falls woefully short.

Loved the podcast, as usual.  I've been wondering for many many weeks, though, if Rob REALLY thinks Ricochet members are smart, or if that's just Hollywood flattery spilling unintentionally from his lips.  I mean, can't we be expected to bask in the beauty of an exquisitely deft segue without someone pointing out, "HEY - nice segue there, James!"?  The smile of appreciation begins to form on my face as James crafts his transition, when WHAM!  Rob's "laugh track" hits me in the ribs insisting I notice and appreciate James's artistry.  (Peter gets a pass this week because he wasn't available to trip over the segue, and because I adore him.)  Perhaps, just once, you could let us listeners engage in our own little "Where's Waldo" game and find the segue on our own?  Doesn't that sound like fun?

Hi,  Does anyone know the name of the artist and song title at the end of the podcast?

Thanks
