Ricochet Podcast #74: The Governors
As we pointed out yesterday, these days anyone can book presidential candidates. They'll come to your house if you ask nicely enough. That's why we booked the guys that didn't run. We're joined by Indiana's Mitch Daniels and Mississippi's Haley Barbour who give us their unique insights on running their states and our prospects for 2012. Then, stick around for a our host's take on two very popular topics on Ricochet this week: the prospect of a conservative version of NPR and gay marriage.
In honor of a Big Man, some Big Links:
- Ann Coulter will indeed make her triumphant return to Ricochet on June 29th for a members only live chat (text, not audio). Get your copy of Demonic and start getting your questions and comments ready. We'll announce the specific time early next week, but as you heard, it'll be around the dinner hour on the west coast.
- State lawmakers in Texas recently passed (and Governor Perry signed) a bill that lets any incandescent light bulb manufactured in Texas - and sold in that state - avoid the authority of the federal government or the repeal of the 2007 energy independence act that starts phasing out some incandescent light bulbs next year. Republicans in the House have tried to repeal the federal regulation since Congress first passed the Energy Independence Act in 2007. The latest repeal bill, Joe Barton's (R-Tex.) Better Use of Light Bulbs Act, currently has 69 cosponors in the House. But according to The Weekly Standard, the prospects for it's passage are, uh, dim.
- The Toyota plant in Princeton, Indiana looks huge. They produce the Sequoia full-size sport utility vehicle, the Sienna minivan, and the Highlander mid-size sport utility vehicle. Tours are available.
- South Carolina governor Nikki Haley has indeed been fighting the good fight against the federal government to get the National Labor Relations Board to move a plant from Washington state to South Carolina. Our own Richard Epstein gives some background here.
- The pro-life group Americans United For Life did in fact name Mississippi as the safest state in American for the unborn child.
- In a podcast two weeks ago, Peter Robinson famously declared Mitt Romney "toast." The Wall Street Journal's John Fund thinks of Romney more as freshly baked bread, still warm from the oven.
- This week's New York Times profile on Michelle Bachmann was stunning for it's sympathetic and accurate portrayal of her. It's almost as if they are actually doing journalism over there.
- This passage from Dutch, the authorized biography of Ronald Reagan, confirms what Peter said about Reagan's regret over signing 1967's Therapeutic Abortion bill: He signed it into law. Only as abortion became an extension of welfare, would he wish he had paid more head to the bill’s manipulative language. The very word “Therapeutic” was a medical euphemism, sanitizing essentially bloody procedures. It defined “mental health” as at-risk if a pregnant teen went out and smashed windows. In common with the more liberal laws it was to spawn at state and federal levels, the Act ignored the feelings of fathers. Reagan was left with a sense of guilt. “If there is a question as to whether there is life or death, the doubt should be resolved in favor of life.” More on Reagan's views on the topic here.
- Peter's post musing about a conservative NPR reeled in a ton of comments. We think it's a great idea that Ricochet is already doing with our ever growing slate of podcasts.
- A big chorus of "fabulous!" to Ricochet member Ed Gorz for winning the highly coveted, much sought after Ricochet Podcast Mention of The Week for his post Beating A Gay Dead Horse. He wins a copy of our Encounter Pick of The Week. We'll be in touch, Ed.
- The correct (according to Webster's) pronunciation of imprimatur is here.
- We have not been keeping score of whose predictions on the Next Week's Big Story segment have been correct. Perhaps someone in the vast Ricochet Podcast listenership would like to take this project on?
- Wizard is a German power metal band, formed in 1989 by the drummer Sören van Heek. Lileks has all their records.
Music from this week's episode:
- Hallogallo by Nue!
- Paradise By The "C" by Clarence Clemons & The E Street Band

Re: Ricochet Podcast #74: The Governors
The repeal of the ban on incandescent light bulbs is the biggest no-brainer in political history. If the Republicans can't make that happen, it really is time for a third party.

Re: Ricochet Podcast #74: The Governors
It will be a stain on our conscience if the Potter thing doesn't win Post of the Week. At that point, Ricochet will have lost part of her soul. Like a Horcrux.

Wasn't there talk of a Lileks podcast several episodes ago? Is that still in the works?

Is that that book written by that homeless lady? I think I heard of that once.

I may not be able to make it for the Live Chit Chat with Lady Ann of the Coultergeist. I send regrets in advance.

No, I post from the computer behind a Don Rumsfeld podium. Of course I'm sitting down! Though reserve the right to get up and pace in frustration.
Sigh, I really wanted that book from Sir Andrew Lloyd-Webber, too. Either that or Fatima's Gateway by Nina Totenberg.
Though in fairness, "Beating a Dead Gay Horse" is a title I won't have to make more scandalous for the live Tweeting.

We found a shot of Rob with his high-mileage Imprimatur.

(And you make me sign in, yet again!)
The governers think that if you can get the nomination, you are not unelectable. What does Senator Angle have to say about that?

Recently, Mr. Lileks has been messing with us, or faking third-grade math, with his episode numbers:
#74--"Volume 2, number xxix"
#73--"Volume 2, number xxiii"
#72--"Volume 2, number xxii"
#71--"Volume 2, number xxi"
#69 & 70, no volume 2 citation
#68--"Volume 2, number x...5 one one one"
#55--"Volume 2, number 3"
#52-54, no volume 2 citation

I noticed the same thing. Mr. Lileks, what are you up to?

Re: Ricochet Podcast #74: The Governors
Contrary to the assertion in the podcast I suspect that Ann Coulter would have no problem blending into Venice Beach CA. To crib a line from Beverly Hills Cop 2, Gorgeous six foot tall blondes aren't exactly rare in California.

"The Second Foundation" is my second time in a week to bring up Hari Seldon (the first was regarding Claire's Boccacian futurists). Somehow these Lileks sci-fi refs always slip under the ombuds radar.

Blue Yeti. I would like to make a humble suggestion. During the Long/Coulter dinner chat, maybe you could open a Ricochet room on turntable and you and Lance and anyone else that cared to could further entertain us with a soundtrack for the chatter. Just a thought, but I think it could be a blast for those of us that crave even more stimulation.

He wants it so badly. You don't even need to send him a book. Just a shout-out would sustain him. Maybe a special category for the "founding class" of May 2010...?

Re: Ricochet Podcast #74: The Governors
A conservative NPR? I'd happily listen and subscribe to an audio smorgasbord of intellectually upscale, light-not-heat, conservative discourse: with shows like unto LawTalk, Uncommon Knowledge, and the late, lamented Firing Line; maybe with arts interviews by Terry Teachout instead of Terry Gross, and so on. Perhaps an expansion of Ricochet podcasts with such a focus? But, to reach the broader American public, I think we need something else.
Let's consider the cool-kids-table question and think about what we should and shouldn't want. We MUST NOT hanker for the approval of our enemies. That way lies destruction. What we MUST HAVE is non-marginalized access to the attention of those who don't already agree with us. For that, I think the best approach is this: the establishment of entertainment, journalistic, academic and polemical institutions that are ideologically full-service, like C-SPAN, but with many more consumers than C-SPAN. Even-handed, with advantage right, in that in giving the left its turn, rain falls on the ocean; in giving the right its turn, rain falls on the desert.
