The title is truly a misnomer, because as you'll hear, this group is anything but. Pat Caddell, Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels, and National Review's Jim Geraghty take no prisoners in a very spirited discussion about many of the important races around the country, whether or not folks in other states may get the chance to vote for the Governor, the Republican's overall national strategy, the Tea Party, and a certain candidate in Delaware. In fact, we're laying on extra server capacity for the anticipated reaction to that particular part of the podcast. Have at it!

The Harley in the room.

Grab your clubs, we're hitting the links:

  • Valley Of The Dolls is the famously camp film version of Jacqueline Susann's best-selling novel chronicling the rise and fall of three young ladies in show business. Suffice to say, they often slept late. Fun fact: the screenplay was written by Helen Duetsch and Dorothy Kingsley (corrected).
  • Do not adjust your earbuds. That clicking noise is Jim Geraghty adjusting his new microphone. Hey, we do this live.
  • The Republican Governor's Association (chaired by Ricochet's Haley Barbour) web ads may be found on their YouTube page.
  • Michael Barone’s column on "Skinflint" Daniels' chances of winning the presidency.
  • However, Commentary's Jennifer Rubin (via Matt Continetti) worries that too much austerity is a trap.
  • The most recent Ricochet discussion on Christine O'Donnell featuring the "I Didn't Go To Yale" ad is here. Caddell also mentioned the SNL parody of the first "I'm You" ad.
  • Thinking of running for elected office? You may want to consider hiring Fred Davis' Strategic Perception, Inc. to create your media. Davis has created thousands of political ads, including "I'm You" and the "Mourning In America" ad that plays off the classic spot created for Ronald Reagan's 1984 presidential campaign.
  • The links to Sal Russo and the Tea Party Express. We report, you decide.
  • Dr. Robert Steele appeared on Ricochet Podcast #16, way back in May. If he wins, we'll take most of the credit.
  • James Lileks' line "now is the time on Sprockets when we dance," is from the classic SNL sketch featuring Mike Meyers. The Hebrew subtitles were not part of the original broadcast.
  • Rob quotes Winston Churchill's "Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat" speech, his first as Prime Minister. It was delivered to the House of Commons on May 13th, 1940. Via the miracle of the internet, you can listen to it here.
  • Jeb Bush was also a podcast guest back in the early days. And by early days, we mean April.
  • The much maligned Christine O'Donnelll piece Anne Applebaum wrote for Slate claims that some Americans (not us!) resent upward mobility.
  • We considered ending the podcast with Boola Boola, but Yale's fight song is simply too lame for that.

Pat Caddell rips the guy running Meg Whitman's campaign. Be still my tongue.

Pat Caddell was great, if a bit FOXy ("Dicky Morris" was classic!) but someone needs to brief him on the Ricochet CoC... "Republicans share the same nursemaid" perhaps would have been a better alternative. But next time you need to pair him with someone a bit more... muscular. Poor Jim G. never had a chance to get a word in edgewise.

Rob Long:

"Governor Daniels, would you like to take a few calls from our listeners?"

Peter Robinson:

"Rob! Will....you...never....stop....?"

Caller:

"Yeah, Governor Daniels, folks keep saying you're like, kinda wishy-washy?. Like Howdy Doody? You oughta grow a big ol' mustache, you know? One of them handlebar jobs. An' maybe a, like, "Born to Raise Hell" tattoo?

Mitch Daniels:

"Interesting. The other day, my daughters suggested the 3-day-beard thing. They've got a crush on Joe Miller."

Rob:

"OK! Let's go to....Susan....in New York City."

Caller:

"I can never remember where Indiana is. Is it, like, north of Oklahoma and next to New Mexico?"

Mitch Daniels:

"Um, actually, Susan, we're north of Kentucky and next to Illinois."

Caller:

"It's, like, flat, right? Farms and stuff? Summertime, all those farm guys doing farm stuff with their shirts off? Kind of like a Calvin Klein ad, but sweaty?"

Mitch Daniels:

"Well, yes, agriculture is an Indiana mainstay, but what many people don't know is that we also have a robust manufacturing sector..."

Caller:

"You mean like guys in, um, steel mills, with their shirts off? And sweaty?"

Note to Gov. Daniels: We have a Harley riding governor vs. a president on a girl's bike. How hard is that to exploit?

Meg Whitman is trying to buy the State of California? Is that like buying Newsweek for a buck?

I say let her spend as much as she wants and if she wants to buy the whole state, so much the better.

There's a Pat Caddell-Mike Murphy smackdown? Man, I'll have to listen tonight rather than wait for the weekend.

Of course, Murphy is handicapped by fighting in absentia. As if Pat "Chuck Norris" Caddell wasn't hard enough to handle.

I agree that "Mourning In America" video should be running on TV 24/7. It would definitely appeal to women. I'd consider myself a "Walmart Mom" (actually "Target Mom" is more appropriate for me), and if the GOP wishes to reach the WM's, spots like this definitely would resonate. I really don't believe that the GOP will really be able to take back power until they convince suburban moms to vote for them. They are a critical part of the voting electorate that is being ignored. And women like O'Donnell and Palin aren't the answer. Trust me.

Pat Caddell, please drink more coffee next time. Also, we need to add punch and kick sound effects when Pat gets excited.

Always a pleasure to hear Pat and Jim's analysis. Pat seemed a little subdued, though.

It was a bit annoying hearing Jim Geraghty being cut off everytime he tried to make a point.

I think the Pat/Jim pairing doesn't work and I like them both.

Caddell gets one thing wrong. He says O'Donnell should have been bought off by being allowed to run for the House instead. But Delaware is so smalll the size of its House district is the state. She still would have to run a state-wide campaign.

Cadelll is great. I love his enthusiasm. He said HÄCK. I wonder what his actual political views are.

Er, I woln't have any substantive comments till I listen in as I do every week on my Saturday morning run.

But I know one bit of trivia- the Valley of the Dolls screenplay was not written by Roger Ebert. He wrote Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, the soft-porn sequel filmed by schlock director Russ Meyer. Mr. Ebert, sad though his current health situation may be and which we regret out of our loving humanity, is not classy enough to be associated with the original fillum.
