A game show host, a truck driver and a governor walk into a bar. No they don't, they join us on the podcast this week: Pat Sajak, Dave Carter, and Governor Pete Wilson. It's a wide ranging discussion from trucking to tea parties to an inside look at the Golden State, both in terms of the election and the future. All that, and the view from Prague.

This week's 100% fat free links:

  • Shandy is typically made of beer and lemonade. But you can also make it with ginger.
  • Václav Havel's Wikipedia entry.
  • Franz Kafka requested in his will that his unfinished novel The Castle be burned before anyone could read it. That didn't happen.
  • E.J. Dionne's laughable piece on the roots of a certain community organizer.
  • The origins of the phrase tea party (at least in the modern sense) is unclear, but CNBC's Rick Santelli's now famous outburst from the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange on February 19th, 2009 is recognized as one of the first times the phrase was used.
  • Dave Carter's post The Theft Of Your Retirement is legendary around here.
  • Pat Sajak's post Accountability for Pundits? sent a chill through the chattering classes.
  • We refuse to post a link to Gloria Allred's website.
  • Pete Wilson has done just about all you can do in California politics.
  • Lileks wishes Governor Schwarzenegger had actually said this in real life.
  • Jerry Brown's crushing defeat at the hands (claws?) of the medfly is conveniently documented on Meg Whitman's campaign site.

If you'll note carefully, in all the old Bond films, the villain's cat was the smartest one of all. So, if, one day, you turn on Wheel of Fortune and Vanna mentions a cat, you will know how deep my claws have sunk in.

Next time y'all have Dave on, please don't lob him those "What's the word on the street?" questions. I want to hear Dave as simply a smart and funny guy, not as heartland ambassador.

From last week:

These seizures, combined with the two even bigger take overs in March 2009... means the government now is in charge of 70% of all corporate credit union assets.

I noticed hardly a ripple among conservatives about this. Are we already getting used to the idea of government seizures?

With phrases like "to Hell with that" and "it's just not going to happen", Republicans can go far. [I jotted that down before I heard James agree, too. I doubt we're the only ones who responded so.] Blunt honesty is so refreshing after decades of political correctness and pandering.

Governor Wilson used the magic word: "undo".

His description of union money controlling politicians makes me think of D.C. residents complaining about lacking representation. The District of Columbia was supposed to be a place where citizens temporarily serve our society before returning home. Now it's home for far too many people, and they're not serving.

Hell, yeah. I'd get a Logo cap. Thus displaying my utter embarrassing lovesick devotion to the Logo, and allowing me to shower only on alternate days, as a good blogger should.

But man, I think Scott Reusser's the bomb, but for Peter to describe him as "delightful, delicious, delovely" was a bit much.

I agree that the out of control spending began under Bush, but I'd like to know exactly what spending folks thought was irresponsible. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan? The creation of the Department of Homeland Security? HIV aid to Africa? Medicare prescription drug benefits for seniors? No Child Left Behind? TARP? I'm not being facetious, I truly would like to get people's opinions. If/when Republicans gain control, what will be its Achilles' heel concerning spending?

I said that? Must have been the lingering effects of last week's antibiotics.

Can't recall the exact words. May have been "scrumdiddlyumptious" or "all that and a bag of chips".

So, barring massive fraud by ACORN, we are on the eve of the Tea Revolution? The Tea Palin Revolution?

Perhaps like in Capricorn One he's really in Prague when he claims to be in CA and vice versa.

This is what I've been trying to tell the Blue Yeti. Sometimes I sound awesome, and sometimes I sound awesomer. It's all about the connection. It's got nothing to do with the equipment.

Really enjoyed Pete Wilson - a nice counter balance to Rob and James' free spirited style.

But, for me, Dave Carter's comments sort of menacingly linking increases in guns sales to people "drawing a line in the sand" and "consequences" does not chime at all with the Ricochet vibe, or even with how America in general irons out its internal disagreements.

I was suprised Rob or James didn't challenge him on that.

Kyle, without going back to hear the exact words, I think Dave's point was that a lot of Americans feel government will continue invading our liberties unless we do draw a line in the sand, and there's no obvious way to do that other than just to say "come and take it"... which is a warning, not a threat.

It's not about whether or not we are still willing strive for freedom through politics. We are. Overwhelmingly, Americans still seek reform through voting and public discourse. Rather, it's about whether or not we are helpless to defend ourselves when politicians fail to defend us. Rising gun sales signal that Americans are assuming a defensive posture, and not an aggressive one.

Politics was never meant to be the focus of our lives. The founding American ideal was citizens living locally and individually, with as little government interference as possible. Our engagement with and response to societal challenges should never be limited to government involvement.

Are there any plans to produce transcripts for the podcasts? I'd be willing to do it for a price.

It appears that this title may not be released until next week. We will check with Encounter Books for you on Monday and report back (we'll ask them about the PDF's too).
