Ricochet Podcast #112: On Wisconsin with Scott Walker and Paul Ryan
We didn't plan this, it just worked out in the last 24 hours that two of Wisconsin's rising stars, Governor Scott Walker and Representative Paul Ryan wound up on the same podcast. The governor discusses unions, his recall battle, and how the situation in Wisconsin could be a harbinger for the federal government. Then, Paul Ryan talks with Peter Robinson about his new budget, how he sells his health care cost structure to his Aunt Ellen, and reveals how Mitt Romney will run on Ryan's budget in the fall. Last, but certainly not least, Ricochet's own Adam Freedman stops by to analyze the SCOTUS health care arguments. A fully packed show!

Basil Fawlty: It was my understanding that Trayvon Martin was shot in the chest, not in the back. Does Rob have more current information? · 6 hours ago

I read the same thing.
I also thought I heard a claim that Eugene McCarthy was from Wisconsin (noting the broad spectrum of Badger State politics by contrasting him with Joe McCarthy), but Eugene was actually from Minnesota.
Edit: I should listen to the whole podcast before I comment, or else risk that a late in-show correction will nullify my words.

Peter self-corrected on the podcast about Eugene McCarthy's home state, but I'm still curious as to the provenance of Rob's comment that Trayvon was shot in the back.

Lileks' taste doesn't need validation from any quarter, but I enthusiastically join in his endorsement of the Ricky Gervais Show (and the otherworldly Karl Pilkington), as well as "Awake" (I'm only two shows in, but it really is that good).

You know, I can't remember where I read it. Probably at CNN.com. And maybe it was in the first day of the story, when things were crystal clear. To the media, anyway.

With His genuine interest and professionalism, I could listen to Peter interview Everyone on planet Earth.

Re: Ricochet Podcast #112: On Wisconsin with Scott Walker and Paul Ryan
Is there something to Mr. Lileks saying "conservativ(e)ism" instead of "conservatism" that I'm missing? Is he saying it that way on purpose, as a Ricochet in-joke? He's The Man, and can therefore pronounce it however he wants, but I just wonder if there's more to the story.
Re: Ricochet Podcast #112: On Wisconsin with Scott Walker and Paul Ryan
Awk: there are two explanations.
1. "Conservativism" was the term preferred during the Roosevelt years, when the total and utter romp of the Democrats compelled the party to retrench and revamp. It was a rebranding, to use a modern term, and the extra syllable was intended to make it sound more “academic,” and hence a worthy intellectual competitor to the “Brain Trust” running the New Deal.
2. The last few weeks I’ve been doing the podcast about 25 minutes after waking up, with three strong stout mugs of coffee that lubricate the tongue but fail to connect it to the eyes reading the copy. I had no idea I was saying it, and feel like an utter idiot. Rest assured I will make a point of pronouncing it that way in the future, just for self-mocking fun.

Get started on Master and Commander. Just keep the next book in the series nearby as you read each. Your reading will speed up from about midway in the third (H.M.S. Surprise) and you'll want to keep going.

This is why I like Ricochet: a reply from The Man himself. As to what I choicerated, I think all right-thinking people would agree that explanation #1 more than adequatulantly*, uh, explains your use of "conservativ(e)ism." And to buttress your explanation, let me work in the name of Reinhold Niebuhr here, as clearly he had something to do with all of this, and if not, at least maybe I'll impress David Brooks if he happens to read this.
