Sir Rob

The title refers to the quiz included in Dr. Charles Murray's new book, Coming Apart: The State of White America, 1960 – 2010. One of our hosts scored so low that we had to book Dr. Murray to come on and personally berate him (The quiz is here. Take it and give us your score in the comments). We'll let you guess who this outlier actually is. Later, the WSJ's James Taranto on politics, parsing Obama's approval numbers, Rush, and the best place to buy a cigar in Manhattan. Finally, the "Ricochet Podcast Member Post of the Week" is back and Matthew Gilley, come on down! You're our first winner for your post A Little South in Mitt's Mouth. Congrats and we'll be in touch.

I have to apologize to Rob for asking in the comments to Dianne's January conversation, "When do we get to find out Rob Nine-Points Long's score?"  He exceeded my guess by almost 50%!

Thank goodness for Rob, I was worried my 15 would be the lowest score on Ricochet!

Scored a 78 ... haven't bought a Bud since my 1st Dos Equis Amber and disconnected from cable 12 years ago. Growing up in small towns in TX and CA and a stint in the Navy helped.

That's an odd combination...

I'm at about 40, give or take 3 points or so. (I never have an easy time interpreting questionnaires.)

Having been listening to the Ricochet podcast for free in past months, I finally sucumed to the pitiful wailing and joined last week. This is my maiden posting.

I scored a 75 and can't imagine how anyone could score a 13.

57. Growing up in the south helps. I worked in a real service station for years part time. I have a pick up.

I scored a 50, half of which was amassed in the first 4 questions.  And I fervently wish my score were lower by 1; that hour I spent watching Oprah is 60 minutes I'll never get back.

46 thanks to growing up in a small town in the South (where I still live)

Alex: 50 and Judith 60.  Upper middle class upbringing with boosts from missionary work and a love of pop culture. All those JAG and NCIS episodes finally paid off! (at least for Judith). And being a nurse helps.

This reminds Judith of a clip from a reality TV show where a woman had never heard of Walmart. Say what?!?

I escaped a well-to-do suburb in the People's Republic of Massachusetts at 18, joined the military following college, and managed at robust 45.

Though I take issue with the limitation of having to buy only "domestic, mass-market beer" to get points.  What if you brew your own?

That is a far sight different than drinking the Champagne and Skyy Vodka of the upper middle class (At least that is how I interpret the insinuation of this question).

:-)

47.  But I think flyfishing probably wouldn't count, so maybe I'm a 46.  And I love English Premier League soccer, so another -10 for a 36.

Actually, you'd be surprised by the working-class support for soccer in this country.  -5 for a 41.

63.  Spent a lot of time as an engineer in manufacturing plants in small towns in the South.  Worked my way through engineering school as a co-op/  First big summer job was unloading body sheet metal out of box cars at a GM plant. Oh yeah, the Military popped in there as well.

40. I'm the son of a Kennedy Administration AAJ, whose mother's second marriage brought the family to a small town in upper Michigan. Were it not for that whole sequence of events, I'd have been a 13 like Rob. And I am sure my two half siblings are 8s at best. I am a member now because of Rob's early in the podcast exhortation to join. My wife is a member and we've been listening to the podcast for several months. My high school-age daughter really likes it. Rob's plea drove me to join. I think he should know that; measuring the audience is important. I work in entertainment too, but on the operational, rather than creative, side. Now Rob did mention that the "backers" needed more members for some reason, that the 20,000 today somehow wasn't enough. I am here to help! And someday I'll figure out how to get blank lines in a post.

42 - thanks largely to military service. And, hey, I don't drink Bud, Coors, etc. because it tastes gawdawful, not because of its image.

47, for what it's worth.  I'm a cultural blank in some ways because I haven't watched TV in years, don't want to see most movies Hollywood cranks out, and don't follow sports.
