Minnesota Mind

This week, Dr. Thomas Sowell and Ricochet's own Mollie Hemingway gather 'round the microphone. We cover Super Tuesday, Dr. Sowell's new book Intellectuals and Society, religious freedom, Rush to justice, free birth control, a first hand account of Andrew Breitbart's funeral, and an innovative idea on how the city of Minneapolis could instantly get happier.

Just finished the segment with Mollie Hemingway, and really enjoyed it. Give that woman her own podcast.

Or at least put her in the rotation of Ricochet Podcast regulars.

Hmph... Mr Lileks and EJ Hill; I  would have assumed a mention of # 29 would be in good order:

In the 1977 season, Carew batted .388, which was the highest since Boston's Ted Williams hit .406 in 1941, and won the American League's Most Valuable Player award.

Great to hear Mollie on the podcast.

I'm almost inclined to head to DC with a sign "Give me the dignity to struggle with my faith." If I had any talents with graphic design, I might style it after the "Keep Calm" poster. But where's the best place to stand: the White House, Congress, HHS...

I don't think so, but maybe I missed something? You'll notice the podcast gets a little choppy towards the end of the interview with Dr. Sowell because James was having momentary trouble with his router, but I thought I cut all of that out. Oh well.

I don't know why the episode isn't listed, but it is there. If you click here (you may have to then click on the view in iTunes button) and then click on the subscribe button, you'll get it.

Leslie Watkins: One of my favorite things about this podcast (and there are many) is listening to James's riffs of righteous indignation.

I thoroughly enjoy them, too.  It brings a smile to my face as I'm listening.

Rob's reference to "Ezra Nitrous" who might have invented nitrous oxide is cute. "Ezra" means assistance or aid (as in "first aid"), so it's a better line that Rob had thought.

I wasn't born in MN, but I'd vote for the finesse hitter and the  slugger-Carew and Killebrew.

Schlesinger's wisdom of 1981... of course! How could I forget about it yesterday (in my comment about anniversary of Reagan's "Evil empire" speech). This was served to the intelligentsia as the consensus in the West - so, if you thought (or at least hoped) that Soviet economy was on the verge of collapse, you were essentially arguing that the Earth was flat! And if you were reading Solzhenitsyn or 1984 - you really needed to have your had examined!

Bert Blyleven? Cool choice, but he's no Mickey Lolich. :=)

So what term should we use instead of "Intellectual"?  At first I thought of Empiricist, with empiricism meaning "the doctrine that allknowledge of matters of fact derives from experience and that the mind is not furnished with a set of concepts in advance of experience" (from dictionary.reference.com).  But, unfortunately, I think too many people might confuse this with Imperialist.  So how about realist or rationalist?

I have Keep Calm & Carry On paraphernalia (apron & kitchen glove) and I firmly believe that it reflects the once-ubiquitous indomitable spirit of the Briton, rather than the cowardly resigned attitude Rob interpreted.  But the design I chose to wear out on a t-shirt is "Freedom is in Peril, Defend it with all your Might".  I got a lot of raised eyebrows when I wore it shopping at Ikea...

But for a Soviet-era woman in Siberia with its dearth of sun-lamps, a white bikini is logical.  It camouflages her perfectly in the snowy landscape.
