It's a reunion and a remembrance. Jonah Goldberg (author of the forthcoming The Tyranny of Cliches: How Liberals Cheat in the War of Ideas) sits in for Peter Robinson and, of course, we talk about the life and times of Andrew Breitbart, courtesy of three guys who knew him well. Then we take questions from members on a variety of topics, political and cultural. Warning: Heavy Star Trek references ahead.

Any podcast with Jonah is my favorite.

I got to spend some time with Andrew a couple years back at CPAC.  We sat on a couch in the hotel lobby and talked about everything but politics.  Mostly music.

I always say politics is 1% of who we are.  Never let that get in the way of knowing the other 99% of a person.

I'm glad I got to know some of Andrew outside of politics.

Weelllll...

It was a very good podcast, but I'm still shaking my head that it centered on:

  • The tragic passing of Andrew Breitbart
  • Old TV shows (notably Star Trek but with extensive references to The Simpsons
  • The death of James Q Wilson
  • The old washed up stars who make up the Motion Picture Academy

And yet they failed to mention the passing of Davy Jones.  I certainly don't put him in the category of Breitbart of Wilson, but c'mon guys!  He was a cultural touchstone!

According to John Phillips of KABC, Breitbart did in fact post the entire Sherrod speech on his website but that Glenn Beck jumped the gun and used an abbreviated version on his show on Fox, which is why Breitbart got blamed for "playing fast and loose with the facts." ... Too bad Mickey Kaus couldn't have joined you for the podcast. He wrote one of the sweetest posts today, spurred in part by David Frum's unsurprisingly jerky commentary of yesterday.

The extended discussion of Star Trek makes me nostalgic for James' original Diner radio show. I'm listening to the podcast now, and I keep wanting to call in . . .

(I did call in to The Diner once . . . on the topic of discontinued Crayola colors that got replaced with happy, brite nu-colors intended to appeal to "today's kids.")

I never understood a single word of the Star Trek discussion (and I watched it some decades ago); yet it was still hilarious.  Lileks and Goldberg are ultimate Star Trek geeks.

Great podcast.

Nice audio at the very end. I wonder what Jonah said that was censored. It did not sound book related.

Nice tributes to Andrew Breitbart and James Q. Wilson and, best of all, precious little about the @#**!! GOP nomination drag. Refreshing!

Great podcast. · 5 minutes ago

I laughed aloud at Rob's verbal eyerolls during that discussion.  A good laugh was needed, so thanks guys!

Gentlemen, I'm sure you know that 'The Squire' --- William Campbell was the husband of Judith Campbell Exner, the mistress of both JFK and Sam Giancana. Surely worth a mention in a politics/Star Trek discussion.

Holy Fizbin, Rightfromthestart: I did not know that. Thanks!

Nothing was censored, it was just a Skype drop-out. We usually cut those out, but was rushing to get this published. When we do make edits (not unheard of when Jonah is on), we always put in a bleep.

The Sherrod smear is just one effort by the left to tell a lie enough that it becomes the truth.

Another is that his colleague James O'Keefe tried to tap Mary Landrieu's phones; whereas they were merely there to do  hidden camera work to verify Landrieu's alleged ignoring of constituent calls (with no tapping involved) .

As to Sherrod, Jonah was the closest to correct.  I too was on the Big site that day (Government, I think).  Jonah is correct in recalling that the video posted was incomplete (sorry, James), and was later augmented with the remainder, when it became available.

The important point missed was the text Breitbart wrote, wherein he briefly mentioned the outcome, words to the effect of, "her ultimate humanity compelled her to help these people".  They researched the upshot and he included that in his description.  The Big sites later posted more complete video, once it became available, but the text description always had noted that Sherrod had done the right thing.  The main focus had been the audience reaction to her originally denying the farmers assistance.  It was the short-attention-span folks that only watched the posted video and did not read the posted text by Breitbart that led to the accusations of selective editing of the video.

If Rob wants a distillation of Pigford, he needs to talk to Lee Stranahan.

I was hoping for some scathing epitaph trumping the feckless crap weasel and CESM definitions. I can dream, can't I?

The Star Trek discussion was great.  Amazingly enough, a Google Search for "e plebnista" provides a link to an ancient Bleat from last century. Who knew?
