Re: Ricochet Podcast #107: The Devil and Pat Buchanan
I believe this episode proved the point Charles Murray was making in his book Coming Apart: that we really are a nation of two distinctive cultural classes. Though I'm resigned to a Romney candidacy, it's a resignation fraught with resentment as everything that the elites (i.e. Lileks and Long) tell me I'm supposed to value in the man - his managerial experience, his financial background, his nuance, his temperament - I find repulsive.
Frankly I'm stunned that Lileks and Long would actually believe that the same man whose "enlightened managerialness" led to RomneyCare is the same man they claim will dive into a telephone booth, tear-off his mild-mannered RINO identity, and, emerging as Severely Conservative Man, repeal ObamaCare just in time to save America from the speeding train of economic destruction. I guess even the elites have their comic-book fantasies.
So as we all labor through Obama's second term, I'll cling ever more tightly to my religion, guns, Hispanicness, and blue-collar pipe-welding bona-fides as the elites pine for another champion of Republican "electability" in 2016. No wonder "White America" is "coming apart."

That seems to be the argument of some of the higher ups here, that it's better if the country slowly drifts into hell rather than just plunging right in. If they're right... if conservatism can't win in America... I'd just as soon get it over with, thanks.

To be persuaded, they have to listen to you first. How many in the center, let alone the Left, would ever even listen to Santorum?
From about minute 50 of the podcast, Rob and James make the point I have tried to express for 3 months. For roughly the same reasons.
The Buckley Rule still applies.

If I'm Rob and James I'm thrilled- finally, I'm an elite!

I was thinking similar thoughts - perhaps we lost '64 by being too pure, but we've lost the government even when we've won ever since then, at best. If we have to go back 60 years to learn a lesson that evidence is provided against every 4 years since then, I'm not sure that's the lesson we need to learn.

Pat, Buchanan, please don't fall for the left's spin on Rick Santorum & Satan. Let's keep in mind that the Satan comment was in 2008 when he was was not yet running for office. Of course in retrospect it would have been much nicer if he had talked about Screwtape or the Old Deceiver, but the point is that by harping on the this, particularly as if Santorum started it, is just falling for the left's spin. Kudos on your important book.

Peter Robinson, during the podcast you said you had to "go find a mass." It sounded as if you believe Ash Wednesday to be a Holy Day of Obligation. It is not. Ash Wednesday it is one of only two days, the other being Good Friday, when we are required to fast (Fast Days). Good Friday is also not a Holy Day of Obligation but we are strongly encouraged to pray the Stations of the Cross or to attend the Liturgy of the Passion of Our Lord in addition to fasting. There is no mass on Good Friday. BTW Fasting means having only one full meal and two smaller meals that together do not constitute a full meal. It is also a day to abstain from meat. Have a blessed lent.
