It's not every podcast that take its inspiration from a neoclassic painting. But when you have a a guest the caliber of talk radio host and super-brain Mark Levin (author of Ameritopia: The Unmaking of America), you have to step up. We cover Florida, Mitt malaise, and Steve Jobs' unique solution to saving Mexico. Then Mark joins to discuss his book, the philosophers that inspired the founding fathers, and the greatness of dogs and Ultimate Fighting Championship. We close with Santorum's long shot. Is it over? The King Prawn: Great show again guys. Mark Levin just seems like a natural fit for Ricochet.

Silly question: when Ricochet membership grows to the point of profitability will its uniqueness be lost to the crowds? Will it become the mall of right of center  conversation rather than the mom and pop shop it is now? · 1 hour ago

I certainly hope not.  What I hope is that there's always something here happening -- and with enough person-to-person links and following tools, you'll be able to have big and small conversations.

Oh, who am I kidding?  We'll never be profitable!

The two fears I have are losing the personal connections and the formation of cliques. Either could be detrimental to the site. However, I do want Ricochet to be profitable because I want it to stick around longer than Mitt Romney's convictions...

Just for fun, on the next podcast, when mentioning the price of coffee please throw out the price we would need to pay with current membership levels to break even. I like this place the way it is, if we're close to profit I'll be more aggressive with my invites. I've only used one and I chose poorly.

Rush is more fun to hear when a Democrat is in the White House. I fear we need 4 more years of Obama to generate enough white blood (i.e. Tea Party) blood cells to combat the infection in our government. I've gotta find Mark on the radio.

Last year's podcast was about Egypt, remember that?

It's not a silly question. I have pondered that myself. What are we now, about 600? (Based on Center of Gravity responses)

This is an intimate group of active contributors and members and we have developed a sense of family that even includes our own collection of inside jokes. (Piano of Doom anyone? Miramaneeeeee!) Do we become more bland to widen the appeal? · 4 hours ago

I'm just finishing up Steve Jobs' biography and I think we have to have some kind of riot by the creatives here against the oppressive management. Once they're profitable of course.

Mark Levin is exactly the brand of political commentary I come to Ricochet to get away from. Shrill bombastic tirades aren't what I signed up for. He kept himself in check for the most part, but that man is truly the talk show host I most despise.

There is nothing center right about Levin, as demonstrated by his over the top harangue about Chris Christie. The idea that a hard right, Jim Demint style conservative could win in NJ is just too silly to countenance. It's so easy for talk show hosts who make their money by appealing to a tiny fraction of the public, rubbing their erogenous zones of righteous indignation, to lambaste those who have the guts to stand in the public arena and try to actually win a majority of voters. Doing that is a whole different ball game from taking pot shots from behind a microphone and drawing a paycheck for losing your temper every night, screaming in the most hyperbolic and gratuitous way at people who call into your show.

I'm disappointed at the obsequious praise the gang felt the need to shower this obnoxious blowhard with.

I loved this show. If Mark Levin provides rhetorical UFC, James gives us a combo of rhetorical figure skating and rhetorical sky diving -- beautiful and thrilling. Thank you all so much.

Oh my the bunker mentality.
Mark is trying to sell American exceptionism. The thought that America is different from Britain or France is not a new fantasy. Is America really that different not withstanding history? Ricochet is focused on the reality that entitlement, liberalism and fundamentalist secularism are the issues. These issues are global.
Mark is talking about moving into an American bunker where things which were become things which are. America must not start looking West but looking globally and changing it as it did in the later half of the 20th Centrury. It mustn't become, as Gingrich would have it,  another trip to the Moon.
Yes education must be removed from the hands of the liberals. How do we do that? The answer is to grap the web. The details will be filled in by entrepreneurs.
Get to it!

Even if the GOP candidate wins the general, there will be plenty to discuss on Ricochet. For example:

  • Oh, those boneheaded liberals!
  • What a RINO!
  • Technically, what he said is true, kinda.
  • Puppies!
  • Everything you heard about Turkey is wrong.
  • Imagine if Obama had said that.
  • Puppies!

I think this is an area of fundamental disagreement we have. We don't simply need to win votes; we need to do much more than that. We need to educate the voters on the philosophical differences between the left and the right. When we have done that we will get the votes and not by pandering and promising more unicorns and rainbows than the other side promises.

Do you think Levin does anything but preach to the choir? You don't educate anyone by screaming at people who disagree with you and making hyperbolic doomsday rants. That doesn't persuade or edify anyone who doesn't already agree with you. It just puts an angry, red, nasty face on the point of view you espouse.

Great podcast, I started with number one; I do miss Mark Steyn now and then, but it just gets better and better.

Then again, BT, the last time the Republicans won the White House w/out winning NJ was 2004.  The last time they won the White House without winning SC was 1956.

I strongly encourage searching youtube for Levin's favorite UFC fighter, Chael Sonnen, including his appearance on Levin's show.

He is one of the most articulate, brash talkers in the history of sports, and he's also extremely talented. You can see why Levin likes him (plus he's a diehard conservative).

Another amazing UFC fighter is retired Marine Captain and Silver Star winner Brian Stann (who was recently defeated by Sonnen). He's a real life Captain America.

He makes the arguments, but more with a view to entertainment than to substance. I responded to his Romneycare constitutional claims on Mollie's thread where she denied that conservatives were dumb enough to make Levin's argument.

He also says that we need to take steps to move responsibility from the federal government to the states, which he claims Romney is not pushing for. In fact, Romney's plan to move Medicare to the states is the closest a Republican's platform has been to Levin's demand for steps in that direction than any since Goldwater's.

BT: "There is nothing center right about Levin, as demonstrated by his over the top harangue about Chris Christie."

Levin was correct and Christie was incorrect on the facts.  It was a smear, and bought into the Bonior - MSM narrative.  If Levin said something wrong, I'd like to know what it was.

As for your general comment about the persuasiveness of his show to those who are not already persuaded, I tend to agree.  I can only take so much of it myself, even though I agree with him on every issue.
