Ricochet Podcast #102: Back Alley Lightbulbs
Rob Long is traveling, Robinson is asleep (he wakes up eventually), but James Lileks, Troy Senik, and Ben Domenech (subscribe to his indispensable daily email blast, The Transom here) effortlessly pick up the slack. This week: SOPA (no Peter, it's not Spanish soup), Italian ship captains, Bill Kristol on Ron Paul, Romney and making peace with the nominee, and of course, Lileks on lightbulbs.
Music from this week's episode:
- This Is Why We Fight by The Decemberists
- Paint It Black by The Rolling Stones

I love ship wreck pictures. It is a stark message from god saying "Dont get cocky." Fascinating, and beautiful all wrapped into one image.

I knew I'd seen that before, but thought it was from Elvis Costello's vinyl covers.

"Vote for me, I'm one of you."
Twenty-four karat gold, Peter. This was precisely the sentiment when Sarah Palin was selected as the VP candidate. The recognition electrified the conservative base. Need I say more?

Ben and Troy, kiss your free speech over the internet if you believe the feral government is not intending to use any modicum of power over the internet that they get the maximum amount of control over their critics. By the way, almost every internet site is international. Even Ricochet has mirror servers outside the U.S.
Regarding piracy, anyone can hire a lawyer and get on the civil court docket to prosecute copyright infringement, the same as holders of patents and dead tree publications are limited to.
Regarding evidence, IP addresses are maintained on servers and DNS servers can find any site that has been downloaded to. Not an easy process, costs lots of money, which networks and publishers, music, etc., have.
Or... we taxpayers can pay for it and use the hammer of government to keep the cost down.
There is no difference here. Any time a new technology is introduced there are those who are hurt who want government goons to fix their problem.

I have to say I think the movie industry has to take a note from the music industry. Make it so easy and convenient to get digital versions of movies like the iPod did for music, instead of trying to fight piracy with legislation.
They need to break the monopoly of in home content from cable with roku, google tv, and apple tv. I have a roku and I usually just rent movies from amazon prime.... piracy is too annoying.

Re: Ricochet Podcast #102: Back Alley Lightbulbs
The whole brouhaha from the internet folks about SOPA reminded me about the first of Robert Conquest's 3 Laws of Politics: "Everyone is conservative about what he knows best."
Every conservative knows that a huge 1000 page law from Congress is probably the worst way to solve any problem, but those mostly-leftist internet users are only aware of it when Congress threatens their small corner of the world.
