Peter Robinson  EJ is a wonderment.

My father used to call me his Wonder Boy. At least twice a day he'd turn to me and say, "Boy, I wonder about you..."

I'd like to know if Ann favors any particular submission holds or goes strictly for a knockout.

Republican pundits and voters constantly make the mistake of believing elections are decided by the facts. If we can't shake that habit, we will lose.

The Republicans candidate this November will not face Barack Obama's history as President so much as lies and conspiracy from liberals throughout media and government.

Unemployment figures, already ludicrously misleading, will be twisted to paint a picture of recovery. Republican Congressmen will be portrayed as stubborn impediments to the President's solutions. Obama will take the credit for killing Bin Laden, merit be damned. The method by which Obamacare was passed (it wasn't even read) has been utterly forgotten. And the President is now talking about shrinking government, which many idiots will believe despite his record.

I'm not saying the facts won't play a role in the main election. But perception is king in politics. And, as we all know, Republicans are easily manipulated by liberal politicans and reporters.

If "electability" is our primary concern, then let's talk about which candidate has the sand to stand up to liberal nonsense and the savvy to make convincing rebuttals. Let's talk about which candidate can get on offense.

I refer Peter to John Podhoretz's column today in the New York Post:

Those of us who are professionally or avocationally conservative get into the weeds when it comes to politicians’ view. So for us, it isn’t enough that Mitt Romney now says he is pro-life; we know that in 1994 he ran for senator in Massachusetts as an unapologetic abortion supporter. He says flatly that he changed his mind, but people for whom the pro-life cause is central find such a record untrustworthy.

But that isn’t true of the conservative voter. That voter listens to Romney, and she hears Romney say he’s pro-life. That’s more than likely enough for her if the issue is important to her...

In the end, she has to make the judgment: Do I trust that he means what he says now? He says he’d repeal ObamaCare. She doesn’t like ObamaCare. What more does she have to hear?

That’s the call. And it turns out to be a lower hurdle for Romney to clear than many of us expected.

Listening to this podcast I couldn't help but get frustrated with Peter.  Don't get me wrong, I was a die-hard Mitch Daniels fan and was disappointed when Mitch decided not to run.  Romney is not my ideal conservative candidate, but isn't it nearly time to get onboard?  Peter is what, still waiting for superman to walk through the door?  It's down to just a few choices and it appears Romney has it sowed up with what looks to be a clean sweep of the first three contests.  I held out until recently, but if Romney can survive so many front-runners-of-the-week and come out so well.....I think it's time to take your medicine Peter.  You don't need to be convinced by Ann, you need to face reality.  The most cogent thing I have heard in politics recently is that our candidate cannot be controversial because we cannot afford to make the election about anything but a referendum on Obama.  Romney will allow that to happen.  Our choice is very close to being cemented.

The most pressing domestic issue facing the country is not immigration, but entitlement reform. By a long shot. From this week's Weekly Standard:

"On entitlements, I think Romney's plan is easily the best one offered by a Republican candidate," says Yuval Levin of the conservative Ethics and Public Policy Center. "It's a very smart, very well-thought-out, and very conservative approach."

In fact, it's so well-thought-out that Ryan himself modeled it, altering his own plan to coax Dem Senator Wyden on board the reform movement, quietly working behind the scenes to gain bi-partisan legitimacy.

Meanwhile the scattershot Gingrich has an unworkable plan for Medicare reform, has criticized Ryan's bravery as foolishness, and is now making the case with Perry (whether they know it or not) for regulating our not-so-free economy still further -- you know, to protect us from vultures.

This primary is turning into an absolute slam dunk. Not because the "establishment" wants Romney, but because Romney is a serious man and best for the job -- and because the others have proven to be so spectacularly pathetic, Santorum excepted.

Peter your valid skepticism was far more impressive than any of Coulter's half-hearted defenses.

On immigration, I'll take the word of Sheriff Joe Arpaio

On national security, Air Force service is infinitely more important than rhetoric.

Peter, I've gotten so used to you as an interviewer and host on Uncommon Knowledge that I've forgotten what a helluva debater you are; that was awesome, man, so glad you're on our side.

One of my buddies would always defend Ann Coulter on her thorough research, possibly stemming from her clerkship and publications. We always hear Ann the Fire-ey Provacateur, but there were a lot of times in this podcast where her research dedication came through. Always nice to see.

Also, to the responsible party: thank you for the Steely Dan, and can I have another?

Not JMR: This obsession with illegal immigration doesn't make any sense.

Thanks, Peter, for giving a cogent defense of Perry's policies. · Jan 13 at 12:00pm

Well, we do have all these working class people voting for us.  Immigration reform is one of the few things we can do for them that isn't un-conservative.  Their wages would be higher if not for the vast supply of illegal immigrants (not that I blame the immigrants, we do subsidize illegal immigration in a lot of ways).

A-HA!!! EVERYBODY is missing the most important thing here:  Mr. Lileks knows him some fine transatlantic comedy. Or, he is a huge fan of ABBA; not that those are mutually exclusive.  Come to think of it, they're arguably ... identical.  If I may quote the 'reference' in re musical tastes regarding the band 'Wings': 'They're only the band 'The Beatles' could have been.'   Do I get any Ricochet points?  How about a DVD (I'm a Luddite) of the BBC series 'The Trip'?  (Nudge, nudge. Wink, wink).

Uh, no. We've not even done three states yet. How about letting the rest of the country have its say before someone is crowned?

As a Brit I don't claim to understand the intricacies of US illegal immigration. There seems to be this notion that a wall might keep people out and I can only assume it for those people who can't afford the air fare.

What never seems to be discussed in the US, but is evident in the UK, is that legal immigration from Moslem countries of high IQ people i.e. high on the Gaussian distribution will only produce more immigrants by arranged marriages and the children of those marriages will start to fill in the Gaussian curve plus have their own arranged marriages. It is from those children that the dysfunctional elements emerge.

We will have to wait for immigrants to create their own communities in the US before the discussion will start. The history in the UK for instance the East African Asians settled in many parts of the UK when they were evicted from Uganda (circa 1971) and over time started to congregate in certain cites.

An example of a Moslem community when you are over watching the Olympics I suggest you take a short tube ride to Bethnal Green where you will see the future.

(Caution/alert: implicit Lowell Weicker reference imminent) I am now convinced that if Joe Lieberman were running for the Dems instead of Obama, there would be a new organization called "PeterPAC" organized and staked by Our Beloved Founder to allow Republicans to help defeat Romney, because of his one unpardonable sin in the 1994 Senate campaign against Teddy.

As others have stated in the thread, I think the larger relevance is not so much the positions taken by Perry, the Obama administration, etc., but to ignore immigration as a driver for entitlement spending really is missing the long-term impact.  Inevitably illegal immigrants use the emergency room for any medical conditions, the most expensive "care" on the planet.  They qualify for dozens of assistance programs, and make use of as many as they can.  Those dollars all come from somewhere - taxation and borrowing.

So the impact is real.  Measuring it and analyzing it is difficult, as so many outliers and straw-men get thrown around to counter any individual point made.  Let's put it another way:  $90 billion of Medicare spending was fraudulent last year, found in a recent analysis.  Any guesses as to how much of that went to illegal immigrants?  $90 billion.  Well.  But Defense is the one that needs a haircut?

All of this ties back to entitlements, and courting immigrant votes by buying them. Full stop.
