Re: Ricochet Podcast #101: Get Your Mitts Up
This obsession with illegal immigration doesn't make any sense.
Thanks, Peter, for giving a cogent defense of Perry's policies.

Re: Ricochet Podcast #101: Get Your Mitts Up
Coulter is not helping me like Romney. To me, Perry and Gingrich (before they suddenly became anti-capitalists) had a much more practical approach to illegal immigration. And until our economy improves, millions of new illegals flooding across our border will not be our major problem. When it becomes a major problem, again, then we'll know we've recovered.

Re: Ricochet Podcast #101: Get Your Mitts Up
On border security Perry is the most realistic. He is not against securing the border as Ann opines; rather, he is adamantly for securing it. The difference is he sees the reality that just building a fence is impractical and less useful than using fencing where it makes sense plus other methods (technology, manpower, etc.) where those methods will have greater value. Ann's position is just hyperbolic and demagogic. Too bad Perry turned out to be a complete boob.

Re: Ricochet Podcast #101: Get Your Mitts Up
I gotta say: Ann Coulter has lost me. Used to love her but I don't get this defense of Romney. She twists herself more tightly than strings of spaghetti on a fork to defend him and seems to have no regrets doing it. It's outrageous, to her, for Newt to run for President after shooting a commercial . . . commercial? (my Allen Iverson impression) . . . commercial with Nancy Pelosi. BUT, it's completely logical, to her, for Mitt to run after Romneycare, abortion flip-flops , his anti-Reagan statement, etc. I don't get it. And she makes similar non-sensical comparisons with the other candidates as well. I realize she loves the attention and the arguing and being seen as some kind of maverick but she is only doing damage to her reputation.
And one more thing, what unified conservatives into the Tea Party movement was Obamacare. And that Ann says she dislikes Romneycare but says Romney's the most conservative is hilarious. We as conservatives picked universal healthcare as the hill on which to fight and that she aligns herself with someone a little too close to it shows she doesn't appreciate how deep our contempt runs.

Re: Ricochet Podcast #101: Get Your Mitts Up
Speaking of Romney, Ann said, "It reminds me of when Ronald Reagan was running..." That hasn't happened to me with with Romney, ever. I don't foresee it happening between now and November either.

Re: Ricochet Podcast #101: Get Your Mitts Up
Ace sums it up well:
Vote for the candidate who appeals to downscale white voters in the middle... even if the candidate in question does not, in fact, appeal at all to downscale white voters in the middle.
It's confusing, but trust us. We've prevailed in two elections or primaries before this year (out of 17), so seriously, we know what we're doing. That weird, uneasy vibe you get off Romney? Telling you not to trust him? Don't sweat it, we've heard that a million times. And it's just you, anyway. No one else has that, except for everyone else. And that in no way will play any role in this election. Because this election will be decided on ISSUES and principles. You know-- Romney's strength.
So it's not like that whole lack-of-charisma or can't-identify-with-him-at-all background will hurt him at all. Nope! It's all smooth sailing from here, on principles and ideas, and trust us, we've got big plans to have some of those, sometime down the line.

Re: Ricochet Podcast #101: Get Your Mitts Up
I look forward to the listen.
EJ your dream is both great and funny, but pretty unlikely. One of the many problems with Romney is he could no more place Coulter in that perfect office than McCain could allow people to use BO's middle name. If I thought Romney could select Coulter (or David Burge), as Press Secretary, I could vote for him. Instead, we will get, at best, David Frum.

Peter, the damage that the 1994 debate between Romney and Kennedy did to you is incalculable. I can feel it in your every word.

Re: Ricochet Podcast #101: Get Your Mitts Up
For the record, I think her support of Romney is a feather in his cap. I just think that opening up with immigration is a tactical mistake. Her passion for the issue tends to come across as being ugly and its not the issue the campaign should be focusing on this round. In fact the only factor that has any weight at this point is who has the best chance at beating Obama. Everything else seems to be an intellectual exercise. Interesting, even worthwhile for the fitness of the party, but ultimately moot if there is not at least one candidate who presents a better claim at being the one to beat Obama.
I am sure there are other who expressed that sentiment earlier and better, but I am going to tag it as the Dennis Miller Rule. Whomever has the best chance at beating Obama.
Re: Ricochet Podcast #101: Get Your Mitts Up
Beautifully stated, Robert. EJ is a wonderment.
