Ricochet Paragraph of the Week

Commenting on John Yoo's recent attack on Thomas Jefferson--yes, John attacked Jefferson--Ricochet member Zoon Politikon:
Until I got to know you all I'd heard about was what a monster you were. The first time I looked you up i fully expected to see a monster's picture instead of a human being's. Then I started reading what you had to write and watching some interviews and said to myself, "self, that John Yoo ain't so bad after all."
Declaring yourself a Hamiltonian puts us back at square one, Mr. Yoo.

I need to make an admission: I found myself pulled a bit by the anti-Jefferson arguments of John. I still love TJ, but the conversation forced me to admit explicitly that I thought he was a not-so-great politician. Perhaps even a bad one.
This works for me, however, because I don't like politicians and I especially dislike Presidents.

You know, Zoon, I like to think that Ricochet is the last place where these issues are still top-of-mind.
Personally, I'd like to discuss James Madison. A terrific constitution writer. An awful president.

Re: Ricochet Paragraph of the Week
The more I learn about the Founders, the more I come to appreciate George Washington. We soi disant intellectuals incline toward scribblers and philosophers, but rare is the scribbler with the steel and self-restraint to effectively govern. And now that our country staggers under the feckless governance of the second Nero administration, my appreciation for the Father of Our Country only grows.

I think we should all just get together at Rob's house, watch the movie version of 1776, and take a vote on "which Founder".

I have actually started looking at the "binary systems" among the founders. Ever since reading the Jefferson-Adams correspondence I have viewed them as an inseparable pair. I have the same attachment to Madison-Hamilton from the Federalist Papers (of course). I am still looking for Ben Franklin's foil, another favorite, but one who is sadly a lonely-only at the Founders' Dance (so far).
