From the Weekly Standard:   Paul Ryan Not Running for President

My condolences to Professor Rahe and the other Ricochet fans of Ryan.

Ed.'s Update: Here's Ryan's statement:

I sincerely appreciate the support from those eager to chart a brighter future for the next generation.  While humbled by the encouragement, I have not changed my mind, and therefore I am not seeking our party’s nomination for President.  I remain hopeful that our party will nominate a candidate committed to a pro-growth agenda of reform that restores the promise and prosperity of our exceptional nation.  I remain grateful to those I serve in Southern Wisconsin for the unique opportunity to advance this effort in Congress.

If it is true then it's good news for Romney.  Of all the possible candidates I think Ryan would have drained the Romney balloon of air the most.  I'm a Romney supporter but I would have switched to Ryan.

Well, perhaps it's for the best.

I'm going to be watching Palin very closely.  Watching Perry and Romney too.

It's going to be an obsessively fascinating year for politics.

Well, we probably shouldn't don sackcloth and eat ashes just yet. We may not be in love with any of the current field, but this latest poll suggests that Obama can be defeated and that any of the candidates (even Ron Paul!) is within sampling error of catching up to him.

We're just going to have to pick one of them and start pushing.

You're not kidding, katievs.  I've already spent more than half of my day, almost every day reading up on the race -- mostly on Ricochet.  I'll be ready for detox when this is all over.

What's the case for Palin, katievs?  I was a huge fan of hers as McCain's VP pick, but it's been all down hill for me since then.  The reality show.  The seeming lack of seriousness on doing some homework.  Will you try to convince me she's a credible candidate?  I trust your opinion.

I'll be happy when the field is settled so we can get to work picking a candidate to put up against Obama. I think Palin is the last possible contender. Bob Costa thinks she's in, and that makes things look more like a liberal love triangle movie than a presidential primary.

Honestly, I think we need a Ryan in the House, anyway. That, and my general take that legislators make poor executives, lead me to not cry over this.

OK, Richard.  Same question for you as for katievs.  Why Romney?  You don't think Romneycare has tied an anchor to his neck?  You find his federalism argument compelling?  You're not concerned that the Democrats claim they want Obama to run against "anyone but Romney"?  Aren't we letting them pick our candidate, just like they did with McCain?  You don't think he's a managerial progressive, as Professor Rahe has described?  Help me out.  I don't think I need you to describe the up-side of Romney.  I need you to allay my fears about the down-side.

It's like finding out that Peyton Manning won't be going on tour with a string quartet this Fall. He'll keep playing football. Good!

Well, this is bad news -- especially if Chris Christie really is out of the race.

And now I'm back to trying to figure out who the devil I'm going to support in the NH primary.....

Professor Rahe, my primary picks have followed yours one for one.  We seem to have similar tastes.  Would you now give us your analysis of the remaining plausible candidates, including Palin, who appears likely to join the race?  I'm despondent over this, but I think it's still possible to beat Obama.  We just need a credible candidate.

Jeepers.  I no sooner work through the five stages of grief over Mitch Daniels than I have to start them all over again for Paul Ryan.

The level of hype and hope generated by the suggestion Ryan would run indicates a void in the slate of GOP candidates that is still waiting to be filled.  One of them could fill it, but so far it looks like most people are still waiting for "Candidate Other" to step in.

WC,

Whoever it is, our candidate is going to get knocked around like a bowling pin, and called every name in the book by the Democrats. It's got to be someone who feeds off that kind of abuse instead of letting it derail their message.

I actually think this is for the best. We need Ryan in the House as a voice for fiscal sobriety.

Had Paul Ryan run for president, we would have had to endure months of other GOP candidates forced to differentiate themselves from and perhaps criticize Ryan's fiscal plans. Worse, if Ryan didn't get the nomination, I fear that his message would have been fatally damaged by the primary season.

And of course, as a Wisconsin resident (though not in Ryan's district) I didn't want us to lose him and see that district flip back to blue. After a decade of deep purple, I think we're finally a Red State. I prefer it this way.

Well, then.  It's Rick Perry, is it?
